What is Geno Auriemma doing so differently?

I don't watch women's ball at all and have never seen the Huskies play, but why is this guy so much better of a coach than his competition? What does he do differently that he can put up these ridiculous stats? Is he otherworldly X's and O's? Recruits top ten players of every class? I mean, it just blows my mind how far apart his teams are than other teams.
Obviously I don't know the environment of the sport and how it differs with men's. I am just curious as to what facets are different in women's that wouldn't translate to men's.

He is a good coach but there is almost zero competition in women's CBB

I assume there's like 3-5 women's players worth a shite in each recruiting class and he gets all of them every time.

I don't really care about a sport if I can get a team of above average high school boys players and they would beat UCONN girls by 20 plus.

and they all stay 4 years.

My thought has always been that once he had a reputation as the GOAT, given the low levels of competition, the best of the best will flock to his program and further increase the gap to nearly insurmountable levels given the types of players other teams will have available.

He gets the top players in every class and they stay there for 4 years because where in the hell are they gonna go? So, the most talent in the country in a very well defined system for multiple years.
When there are probably only about 15 really talented women's players coming out of high school per year and he's getting 4-5 of them and the rest are being spread around, they're going to dominate.

He recruits well, but he must be great at Xs and Os. The Duke women's coach had some unbelievable classes a few years ago and she could never get over the Elite 8 hump and would routinely lose games to UConn and Notre Dame by 30-40.

when you are hands down the best team, recruiting against 5 other teams really isnt that hard.

He's developed a pipeline to get as many of the best players than anyone else. Don't know that it's any more complicated than that.
Women's CBB is not a fully formed sport. In CBB and the NBA, everyone that can play, does play. That's not the case in women's basketball. There is little incentive for women to play CBB. Where does it lead? To a $100k job in the failing WNBA if you're the best of the best?
So in a sport that's not fully formed, you're going to have these extreme results because there's simply not enough players to go around. There are capable women that just choose not to play, and most of the best ones opt to ply their trade at a few of the traditional powers.

This is not even remotely true.
ESPN actually has their own rankings of HS girl players, and there are plenty of 5* rated players, so he can't get everyone, and not all of he players he gets are rated 5*s. He does appear to get the most out of the players he gets though.

You a lifelong UConn women's basketball fan?

Never pulled for them, so nope.

UCoonn cares about the 2 sports it takes a total of 12 players, combined, to play.

He gets the best players and in WBB the gap from the elite players like Breanna Stewart and the "avg" players is enormous.
Posted on 4/4/16 at 12:19 pm to beantown
ESPN funnels money to his program and he pays the players with these funds.
In all seriousness though, I think the previous posters have answered the question well enough.

This.
It's going to take awhile for someone to build up a program enough to consistently compete with him. IMO Dawn Staley at South Carolina has the best shot if she can nab just a few of those quality players. It's going to multiple classes of doing it like Summit consistently did at Tennessee.

Getting better players by far than everyone else in the country. He's a good coach but hell, we beat him when Starkey was interim coach taking over for Pokey.
Solid coaching and significantly better talent than everyone else = domination.

Geno doesn't realize he is a coach of women's CBB. He acts like he's Red Auerbach or Wooden. Nobody, except female PE teachers and the parents of the "girls" care for women's basketball. I ran into him at the Final 4 in Nola and he was a complete nutsack.
