Williams might have broken it that year too. Would have loved to see if Gwynn could hit .400 that year too.

Better question: what happens to baseball if the 1994 strike hadn't happened?

The gap in popularity between the NFL and MLB wouldn't be as large as it is now. People forget how popular baseball was before the strike. It was huge. After the strike, a lot of people got turned off by the sport and it really hasn't recovered since.

That didnt save baseball, baseball was already dead. Possibly the least cared about sport in the united states, soccer has done passed it

Ironic that during that same year the most popular baseball team ever (NY Yankees) went 114-48 then proceeded to win the WS in dominating fashion, but no one gave a damn because the HR chase.

I know being a fan of Auburn you probably aren't all that great at the whole reading thing but if you'll try the OP again you'll see where I clearly say that in this hypothetical Bonds DOESNT happen

Griffey

The chase in '98 was great, but I think Griffey Jr. made baseball cool again as well. And absent of steroid users he would've been one of the biggest baseball icons of all time imo.

Personally I love to watch football, play basketball, but Griffey Jr will always be my favorite athlete. I'm the sports fan I am today bc of watching him when I was a kid.

Hope his kid Trey can make an NFL roster.

Eta: he's a big baseball icon but I think he'd be on the "Mount Rushmore" of baseball icons if his era wasn't so diluted
