Only "soft" guys Smith, Harden, and Howard. Harden is doing enough this year to shake that perception.

Harden has never been soft. Smith neither. Dwight is really the only one that has been labled that, and that's because he laughs. You don't win defensive player of the year by being "soft". Trying to use common sense here and not being a homer.

I agree. That's why i put it in quotes. They've all had the perception of that.

I've always thought Dwight plays tougher than his perception.

Funny how the premier interior defender in a league full of grown arse men can be called soft. Dwight doesn't back down from anybody.

OK lets argue semantics then What % chance to win a series would qualify as "legitimate chance" to you?

Howard is known for being soft for what he does off the court, not on the court.

and Boom you gota stop saying yall are the premier defense or top defense in the NBA or something. Yall aren't top 5 in any defensive category that matters.

2013-14 numbers show that people still don't even attempt to score on him in the paint.

The Franks-Miller method also helps us understand differences in interior defenders. Below, you see the 2013-14 defensive shot charts of three of the NBA’s most prominent rim protectors.

Interior1152

As you can see, all of these guys turned the paint blue, meaning opponents suddenly shot at below expected efficiency when facing them. However, while Roy Hibbert and Tim Duncan each faced a lot of shots in the paint, Dwight Howard deterred opponents from even attempting close-range field goals. Abandon all hope, ye who enter the paint against Superman.

Dude they were 2 in defensive efficiency just yesterday and have been top 3 for 80% of the season. They are clearly a top defense even without Howard on the court.

I'm not arguing semantics...the first round series in the West are not "pick 'ems" across the board. They may not be as cut-and-dry as in the East, but if you are a team with real championship aspirations "we might lose in the first round" isn't part of the equation. I will grant that Mem/SA is the notable exception on your list.

I doubt the Grizz scoring 102 dropped them from 2 to 6th, but I actually agree on them being a top 5 defense this year. I don't really buy some of the teams currently in the top 5 right now like Portland.

Man I'm looking at it right now and yall aren't top 5 in defensive efficiency, points against, fg% or anything

Yall are a good defense when Howard is there but he's missed more than half the season. Can't really factor him into your defense right now.

I'm not saying yall aren't good but being a top 10 defense =/= top defense in the league.

OKC and Golden State both have championship aspirations and there's a good chance they play in Rd 1. So I'm not following you at all.

One of these years they really will be done...doesn't mean I want to be the one who has to stick the fork in them.

You're looking at it once, I've looked at it 50+ times over the season. HOU has been in the top 3 almost all season.

Even without him there though the pieces are there, no matter what you think of Harden defensively. Beverly and Ariza make a terrific defensive tandem and Terrence Jones is no slouch.

They missed Dwight last night, but not many teams can throw the front court scoring ability at you like Memphis can.

I thought the Grizzlies had stuck the fork in them in 2011 and they've only managed to beat them twice since that playoff series.
