If so, who? Magic? Kareem? Wilt? Russell?

I'd think Kareem but that's slightly before my time.

Greatest player only? Wilt, Stats say so.
If you bring Championships into it, than you have to bring coaches, and teammates into it also, than it's Russell.

I don't believe there was a consensus GOAT. It's similar to how there's no consensus NFL GOAT. You ask ten different people who the greatest NFL player of all-time is and you'll get seven or eight different answers. The same case applied with the NBA before Jordan came along.

Wilt and Russell were the two names thrown around a good bit, though I remember more talking about Wilt.

Below them you had Magic, Kareem, Bird, West, Gervin, Dr. J.

I know some people don't know or remember but Bird was basically declared the best player ever after Boston won the 1986 championship.

Go look up the articles in the newspapers.

Then MJ came along.

MJ scored 63 on the Celtics that year.

And lost.

Bird had 36 points, 12 rebounds and 8 assists...and the 1986 Celtics were declared GOAT team.

I'm no fan of the Celtics but back then, Bird was written about as the best there ever was. For all-around brilliance in controlling the game. Half the time he'd dominate just by rebounding and passing...and be the best player on the court.

And then the torched got passed. But it wasn't in 1986 just b/c Jordan scored a bunch of points...sportswriters and fans were looking for all-around greatness...in all phases of the game.

And it took Jordan awhile to get that...until the early 90's.

I still believe that 86 Celtics should be in the argument for the greatest of all time. Have never seen a team with ball movement that fluid and just excelled at every area of the game.

Just an awesome team to watch.

Well they are.

I know Bill Simmons is a dirty homer but he ranked 1986 Celtics #1 over the 96 Bulls and 87 Lakers.

They had Bill freaking Walton coming off the bench... and he won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award.

Celtics went 40-1 at home.

Wouldn't that suggest he'd be the odds on pick for #2 or #3 right now?

Other guys who came before him are ranked ahead of him, so i'm not sure how he was the consensus best ever before MJ.

He was staying in college another year, AND could've just entered the draft again instead of signing. They freaking drafted him a year early
