Malone played in the NBA for one more season, joining the Los Angeles Lakers in an attempt to win a championship, the only major achievement absent in his career. All-Star point guard Gary Payton also joined the Lakers in an attempt to win his first championship, and with Malone, Payton, Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant, the Lakers were favorites to win the title.

Malone's bid to win an elusive championship failed as the Lakers were defeated in five games by the Detroit Pistons in the 2004 NBA Finals.

The 41 yr old child molester Malone, and the still solid but over the hill 36 yr old Payton only made that a super team by name only.

Had that team been together in 98 then you would have had a point

Malone wasn't bad that year... 48% FG, 8.7 Rebounds per game, 3.9 assist per game, 1.2 steals, 0.5 blocks, 13.2 PPG on only 9.5 shots a game.

Neither Gary Payton nor Karl Malone were top 2 players joining a championship team.

Malone and Payton was already past their prime when they joined the Lakers in 03-04. Malone missed 39 games that season with an injury.

I'm fine with ring chasers as long as they pull weight.

Bro, I don't like Lebron, I'm defending Durant's decision to go to GS.

He's one of a long list of great players that signed with a contender to hopefully win a ring.

Show me the list of a top 3 player at the age of 27 who left a top 4 team to join a championship team.

In any sport.

You are a moron.

Since the age of free agency, it's too many to list. Not all were successful, but there are many dumbass.

There's "super teams" and then there's this year's GS Warriors team.

This squad is unprecedented.

such angry words, know what that usually means? you can't find a top 3 player who left a top 4 team/contender in his prime to join a championship team.

Hell name ONE.

Was traded to a 30-52 LA Lakers.

They were far from the 69 win 71-72 lakers. Of that 71-72 lakers, only Goodrich and Riley remained when Kareem was traded to that team.

completely different than durant joining the warriors where their current team had 6 of the same players from the championship year. 3 of which are all-nba caliber, 2 of which are the 6th and 7th man off the bench, and the last guy is just a 10MPG dude.

by far the worst thread i've seen this week. Let me guess, the CAVS should pick up Barkley and Hakeem Olajuwon so they can produce a super team right since those guys WERE so good?

Prime Kobe/Shaq alone was a superteam. Everyone else was just ring chasers.

With that said - had Malone been healthy in the finals and/or PJ wouldn't have been so stubborn by leaving Fox on the bench and playing Payton too much (he was a defensive liability at that point), the Lakers might have won it all and Kobe/Shaq would have stayed together in bazarro world.
