We probably stole it from Dartmouth in the late 19th century. They had a football cheer that featured the line "Wa-hoo-wa" which we appear to have appropriated whole cloth. Wahoowa would become a line in the school song, and at some point we began to refer to ourselves as the Wahoos or hoos.
As a sidenote... while we are officially the Cavaliers, we don't use that in casual conversation. And no one (should) refers to us as the Cavs.
