Rinaldo hit Letangs shoulder, not square in his numbers with the puck between his legs. It was still a dirty hit that deserves a suspension.

But what a complete dumbass with his post game comments. That alone should merit at least a 20 game suspension. I suspect he only gets 10 games though. The NHL should be ashamed too if that happens.

I say give him 25 game suspension cause FLYERS vs Pens in 27 more games! April 1st will be must watch hockey again. Of course by then the FLYERS will be out of the playoff picture unless last night's game lights a fire & they get hot...Red HOT.

Let's Go FLYERS!

Rinaldo didn't know the puck was there. The last time he saw it, it was headed up the boards away from Letang. Then he locked his sights on Letang and destroyed his target.

It was illegal as hell. He was head-hunting, and like any good goon, he gave himself a cover story so he could argue he was making a hockey play when he wasn't. Rinaldo should be suspended and when he gets back, cut by the Flyers.

That said, Broad Street hockey opened up a can of rhetorical whoop arse on the Penguins, calling them out for their thuggish ways:
LINK

quote:

No. This is wrong. And over the last five or so years of this rivalry, one thing has become more and more clear: The Pittsburgh Penguins are actually the goons. It's not the Flyers, clinging to their Broad Street Bullies glory years, punching their way to relevancy. It's the Penguins who have turned into one of the goonier, dirtier, more violent franchises in the sport.

You can use the 2012 playoff series between the teams as a perfect example. There was Evgeni Malkin's dirty hit on Sean Couturier, Arron Asham's attack on Brayden Schenn, James Neal's head-hunting trip toward Couturier, coach Dan Bylsma being fined $10,000, and Craig Adams being suspended a game for instigating. The Penguins were the reason that series devolved into complete and total mayhem, and their players were given six games worth of suspension as a result. (Frankly, they deserved more.)

Tuesday night in Philadelphia was an even more stark example though, at least in my eyes. Consider that the Penguins are a playoff-caliber team trying to win a Stanley Cup this year. The Flyers are not going to the playoffs. Yet while the Flyers had one "goon" type player in their lineup, the Penguins had three.

quote:

You have two career goons and one guy who's leading the league in penalty minutes all going after players who rarely fight -- and in two instances, guys who have truly almost never fought in their lives. Then elsewhere in the game you have the NHL's leading scorer, Jakub Voracek, also fighting to defend himself from a low-bridge hit.

And yet the Flyers "all the mayhem was wrought by the Flyers" and it's merely the Penguins being brought down to the Flyers level. It's still all Philadelphia's fault.

If it's all Philadelphia's fault, why do the Flyers have a total of 143 fewer penalty minutes than Pittsburgh this year? Why is Pittsburgh among the league leaders in fights and major penalties? Why do they have almost four PIM per game more than the Flyers do?

Yes, I understand this, and i'm not trying to underplay the dirtyness of it, but all I'm saying is that he knew the puck was going that way because of the play - you don't necessarily need to be staring at the damn thing to understand where it is. That gave Rinaldo an alibi so he could headhunt.

Should be out of the game, that's what I meant by "dick move".

I didn't think it mattered in the NHL whether or not you have the puck or just had the puck, you cannot hit someone from behind, in the numbers. Especially leaving your feet, going high, etc.

quote:

A boarding penalty will be assessed for a hit on a defenseless player that causes the victim to hit or impact the boards violently or dangerously. The new wording requires the player delivering the check to avoid or minimize contact if his opponent is defenseless. It also allows the referee discretion to determine whether the recipient of the contact placed himself in a vulnerable position immediately prior to or simultaneously with the collision and whether the check was unavoidable.

A penalty for an illegal check to the head will be assessed for a hit resulting in contact with an opponent's head where the head is targeted and the principal point of contact.

Not even watching, no Letang or Malkin tonight. Malkin not going to AS game either, they want the rest and rightfully so.

Was I arguing that it was legal? No.

Just saying that you don't need to be staring at the puck to know where it is.

And yeah, you can't hit a dude from behind and can't leave your feet. I know we're on a southern sports board but thought it was obv?

Right, and I was just saying what does the puck have to do with that hit? With or without puck, illegal as it can be. I like how he retracted his postgame comments this morning.

He has a hearing in person on Monday, I expect it to be at least 10 if not 15+.

Amazingly, Letang doesn't appear to be injured from the hit, was a game-time decision for tonights game but didn't play, skated this morning with the team like normal. Very very lucky as it seems he'll be ready to go after the AS break.

What a save by Fleury, wow.

And Perron with some serious dangles then missed open net.

Pens have dominated this game since the 2nd began, but need to pull it out.

Perron again wow, I cannot believe how good this guy is. Just phenomenal. Goes to show how much talent can be completely wasted on a bottom feeding team.

frick I hate shootouts, can't wait for 3v3 next year. Helluva game from the Pens, dominated the Hawks despite depleted roster.

Time to tank!

I am excited to see Forsberg though. He impressed me in his previous call up.

I'm pretty sure during the 70s, "pregame warmup" meant puking up the beer you had been pounding all day.

Though there's really not a lot a guy can do to work out his head to make it okay, I'm glad Letang seems all right. That was a ridiculous cheap shot, and Letang is not the kind of player who deserves that. He's got virtually no rep for dirty play at all.

I think we'll crank up the Zamboni and get ourselves some fresh ice for the second half of the season, but before we do that, let's take stock in the season so far as we are roughly at the halfway point.

EAST
7 points separates 1st place (Tampa) from 8th (Boston). Which is also the same gap between Boston and 9th place Florida, the only Eastern team not currently in the playoffs who have a snowball's chance in hell of making the field. The second half will be entirely about jockeying for position among these 8 teams, and it's unlikely any will fall out of the playoff pool. We're almost killing time until the playoffs.

Even better, what's the real advantage to finishing first, other than hone ice? With such a narrow band of performance, pretty much every team is exactly the same, quality wise. The Bolts are likely the best team, but not by much, and no team that finishes 8th will be quaking in their boots to travel to Tampa in the playoffs. Put all of these teams in a bag, shake it up, and however it comes out, it comes out.

WEST
The Ducks and the Preds both lead their divisions, just like we all though, right? The Pacific race is over, as the Ducks have a huge 12 point lead. Even if they played at a point a game pace the rest of the year, which is pretty dismal, they'd end up with 103 points. The Sharks would have to get 48 points in 34 games to top that, or roughly go 22-8-4. So they need to play awesome AND need the Ducks to collapse. Not happening.

The Central race looks to be awesome. The Preds, Blues, and Hawks are within 3 points of one another, so we should have a great race for the title, though I do expect the Preds to fall back a bit (but still easily make the playoffs). The Jets are only 5 points back, but I just can't get myself to believe in them, though they look to be comfortably in the playoffs.

the WC race, though, should be amazing. The Sharks are in 6th, and can't feel comfortable about their playoff position.

Sharks 56
Canucks 55
Flames 53
---------------Playoff line
Kings 52
Avs 50
Stars 49
Wild 46

The Stars have 2 games in hand on the Avs and 1 on the Kings, so they might be in "virtual" 10th. However, with 4 Central teams ahead of the Sharks, the Central squads there might only be fighting over one slot. The Avs and the Stars can't both make the playoffs without a Jets collapse. And does anyone think the Kings miss the playoffs? And who wants to play them? Heck, they still might make it as a divisional 2-seed.

McDAVID SWEEPSTAKES
Only four teams have a realistic shot at finishing dead last:

Sabres 31
Oilers 33
Canes 37
Coyotes 37

I await to see how the Oilers can squander yet another high 1st round draft pick. I think I speak for all neutral hockey fans when I say I'm pulling for McDavid in Buffalo. Good lord they need something good.
