It's my first time in Iowa and I'm going to their opening game tomorrow. Any advice on tickets, tailgating, or in general? Also where are some spots to go after the game to have some drinks and watch more football?

1. Kirk Ferentz, Iowa

Estimated 2015 salary: $4 million

Iowa fans are already rolling their eyes. They’ve heard all this before because they’ve seen their school handcuffed for years by the worst contract in college football. If not for a buyout that at one point would have pushed $20 million, Ferentz likely would have been out. No, he definitely would have been out. Instead, because of an unheard of 10-year deal he signed after the 2009 season, Iowa continues to pay top-10 money for a program that isn’t sniffing the top 10 in the polls. Coaches agree that Iowa isn’t the easiest place to win, but the resources and facilities are well above average and the division is the most winnable in the country. For $4 million per season, the Hawkeyes should get something more -- far more -- than Ferentz’s 6.8 victories a year since he signed the extension. As the buyout becomes more reasonable as the contract nears its 2020 completion, it’ll be interesting to see at what point the administration is willing to pull the trigger.

forget the "how the hell does ferentz have a job" part, ask them how they justify paying him over 4million a year
9th highest pay in the nation

Go to Melrose Ave. before the game and buy a ticket on the cheap. It isn't sold out. You should be able to get a ticket for $20 or less. Melrose Ave. is also a great place to tailgate and the surrounding area. Could also head up to Finkbine Commuter Lot.

For after the game I think a lot of fans go to the Wig and Pen Pizza and Pub and surrounding bars.

Why would you pay to watch Iowa football? Just go one state west and see greatness at Memorial Stadium.

IMO, James Franklin and Art Briles have made the "hard place to win" excuse complete BS.

A great coach can win big anywhere.

Ferentz did a great job up through 2009 including a BCS bowl win. He has developed a lot of players and put them in the NFL. He hasn't done crap in five years and it is time for him to go.

Having said that, Briles is smackdab in the middle of the best recruiting area in the nation. Franklin did a great job, but even he could never win a championship at Vanderbilt nor could anybody.

my favorite has always been Iowa fans claiming that Ferrentz could get a HC gig in NFL anytime he wanted.

Oh yea, and Big Game Bob would come back home to Iowa when Ferrentz leaves.

I've only been to Iowa City twice, both times in undergrad when Wisconsin was playing Iowa. I can't speak on behalf of your traditional tailgate, but we just went to an early morning house party that was a lot of fun.

In terms of after the game, there are bars on College Street (I think?) that we went to.

Kinnick Stadium is actually a very fun place to watch a game. Despite the opponent (UNI) and the mediocre product Iowa has put on the field as of late, it can be a pretty intimidating place to play. The seats go near field level and jet up pretty high, so it almost feels like the crowd is on top of you.

In any case, an overall good experience. You'll have a good time. Iowa City is a fun town.

Tailgating not bad at Iowa, had a friend that went to grad school up there and it is pretty neat college football scene.
