Underhanded Free Throw: Why does no one use it?

I was recently listening to Malcolm Gladwell's Revisionist History podcast. He mentioned how on the night Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points he shot 28/32 from the free throw line thanks to the underhanded free throw. Despite, his amazing numbers that night - Wilt changed his style back to the regular free throw and for the rest of this career struggled. I understand why most guys never venture into the uncharted waters of the underhanded free throw, but at a certain point - why not? Rick Barry never shot worse than 86%. He may have looked goofy, but I think when you make your free throws your opponents have no ammo.
Shaq shot 55% for his career. He spent 19 years trying to fix his biggest weakness, yet never got better than 62%.
If you are someone like Andre Drummond (35%) - why not? Or DeAndre Jordan? At a certain point - the humiliation of shooting less than 40% has to outweigh Barry's FT style. Just my 2 cents.

Because gay. Simple.
It is also an entirely different shooting form to learn

Onuaku from Louisville started using it, and I think had a little bit of success with it. But for most of these guys I'm sure it's a pride thing, plus each team has someone help them with shooting form and FTs. Rick Barry's one of the only underhand specialists.

Welcome back from prison. It was tough only having your alters on here rather than the real deal.

I dunno, just remember back to grade school and middle school PE, they tried to teach us underhand. And then you defied them with overhand and it was easier and felt more natural.

Yea this is probably the third time it had been started in the last few weeks.

Andre Drummond said he was open to the idea of trying them this year.

That was a great episode.
If Shaq would have devoted himself to learning underhand free throws and shot 75-80% from the FT line, he very well could've been GOAT

Yet here you are wasting your "valuable" time.

I think it was Shaq that was once asked how bad his FT% would have to get to change to underhand and he replied "Negative %".
That guy from Louisville that was mentioned will be on the Rockets roster this year. Wonder how long it's been since the last underhand shooter?
I'm guessing it takes a lot of practice to perfect it. I was always able to shoot 90% in practice and 75% in games overhand but could never get better than about 50% underhand (even though I've tried it on and off over the past 20+ years).
