How is it sad?
It's sad that we place that much value on watching someone play a game.

His shoes and apparel made $175 mil for Nike last year. I'm sure Nike will match UA.

Sad that you are not a star athlete?
Whats sad is that people buy and make decisions because of idols and not quality or independent decision making.
They would never pay this if guaranteed sales would not follow

Shaq never spent a dime of his contract money. His endorsement money paid for everything.

This is huge for keeping him in OKC and/or bringing in a big time free agent.
If he is a staying with Nike, sure.
If he takes the UA deal then he is DC bound imo. The UA CEO lives in DC and they are based somewhere in that area I think. Good young roster in DC, he'd be back home, and his high school coach is now on the staff there.
I never really considered it a real possibility this past season, but I was also like 99.9999% sure LeBron was going back to Miami. I think he noticed how LeBron was received for going home. That and how inactive OKC again this year FA can't help.

This could be a bad idea for UA. Congrats to Durant though.

Agreed. I don't really see UA in the shoe game in 5 years, let alone 10.

If they get KD they will be probably. There are like 4 players that truly move shoes. 1 is retired (MJ), 1 is about to retire (Kobe), and then you KD and LeBron.
KD is a great guy to latch on two as well because he is an extremely likable guy and will probably go down as one of the all time greats.
The big issue for UA right now is they don't have the sort of pipeline that Adidas and Nike do through AAU and CBB.

Under Armour is right up the street.

Mine are comfortable as hell
Unless you mean specifically basketball shoes....that would be quite the uphill battle for them.

means that Under Armour would be devoting nearly 10 percent of its current annual marketing budget on him.
thats pretty ballsy
True, but they're trying to grow their basketball revenues from a minuscule percentage and gain market share. You don't do that without making waves and taking chances.

Although Under Armour has given investors guidance that it might hit $3 billion in revenues this year, only about one percent of that is from basketball shoes
This is the main reason they're making a huge play for basketball. Basketball will only grow in popularity in the next 20 years.
