To what point?
To pretty much your whole scenario....and that puts UL in a lower tier conference than ltu-R and Tulane.
The only reasonable scenario is a complete restructuring of the SBC and cusa into more reasonable geographical footprints.

Well... hate to break it to you, but they have been for ~20 years.

I don't think the CUSA teams will go for this, and will instead pull who they want from the SBC.
I don't think CUSA is way ahead of the SBC, but it is and has been. It is the reason the last time the AAC raided CUSA, that everyone but UL(Monroe and Lafayette), Troy, Idaho, AR St, and NewMex St. went to CUSA.

His is pretty damn accurate. We have done absolutely nothing to improve our standing in the realm of collegiate athletics. Improving facilities was done because of needs. Cajun Field is falling apart and a complete renovation is needed just for upkeep. Tigue Moore is antiquated and doesn't fit the program any longer.
We have made zero serious overtures or effort into gaining admission into a better conference. Absolutely Zero.

No one denies that we are not where we should/could be.....certainly not me. And I titalky agree that no one is better at self-destructing than UL.
But that is a very different thing to saying that ltur has been in a better conference than us for last 20 years. That may be true about Tulane, but if we had only a fraction of the money those guys have we would be too.....and no doubt even more successful than them. And again, that would be with just a fraction of their money.

I don't feel like my observation is obtuse. I can certainly understand the frustration to not already being in CUSA or a like conference, but for all intents and purposes CUSA is a tier higher. Not a big tier, but certainly slightly ahead. Unless you can honestly say that if CUSA offered the Cajuns tomorrow that the fan base would not be excited to be in a conference with Rice, UAB, Southern Miss, and Marshall.
I asked for honest feedback from cajun fans about the prospects or the most desirable outcome from any fallback conference realignment. If your honest opinion is that you are already in an equivalent conference with Tulane and Tech then by all means proceed by the status quo. I for one think that the Cajuns have a lot going for them and should strive higher. That's just my opinion though. Judging by Farmer and Savoie's comments and the track record to this point I'm sure they echo the sentiment that a G5 is a G5.

The WAC was Rice, SMU, Boise State, Fresno State, Hawaii,Nevad, and Tulsa. Several National Championships with Rice and Fresno and three BCS births by Boise and Hawaii. IIRC the final year of the conference the WAC had 3 teams in the top 20 with Utah State, San Jose State, and Tech. The SBC had their last ranked team in 2012 ?!? with WKU?! I'm not asking you to like the facts, but facts are facts. The WAC and CUSA are/were better than the Sun Belt.

So the plan is to go ahead with construction even though the money hasn't been raised and just hope like hell it gets raised along the way?

Something like that. There was a bridge loan. Not sure for what amount.

Yep, my kids are in baseball camp at Tigue this week and they've torn it down around them and moved the camp to the indoor facility.

The only window of opportunity for ULL to ever get into C-USA was that small moment when W Ky got in. But that would have been unlikely because Marshall and MTSU really wanted W Ky and I don't think the LaTex schools were clamoring for a geographic additions.
La Tech's institutional profile was somewhat an anomaly for C-USA at the time, but they had had been in a league with UTEP, Rice and Tulsa and had a pretty advanced football program.
I guess my point is that while the Cajuns' AD may be less than exemplary, C-USA wasn't going to happen.
Right now C-USA has too many teams, so even if they lose some to the AAC (which is no certainty; and if they do, it will be 1 or 2), C-USA may not expand anyway.
The biggest possible monkey-wrench I see is the possibility of the MWC moving into Texas (which they should have done 3 years ago).
