UCLA's Josh Rosen used Alabama to make a point about an NCAA problem

In April, there’s a good chance that Josh Rosen comes off the board right at the beginning of the NFL draft. The rising junior quarterback for UCLA was a five-star recruit two years ago and had a strong freshman year, before injuries and an awful running game doomed him to a lost 2016. Rosen’s now back on the field.
He’s also talking a lot, which is something Rosen does. It’s not a bad thing. Rosen is one of the more outspoken stars in a sport that usually puts a premium on Saying The Right Things and not stirring up much controversy. Rosen previously wore a frick TRUMP hat to one of the then-candidate’s golf courses. He has taken aim at the NCAA, too, pointing out the hypocrisy in his school signing a $280 million apparel deal with Under Armour and not splashing any of that cash on players themselves.
quote:
In a Bleacher Report interview published Tuesday, Rosen made waves for one quote in particular. He was speaking at length about the inherent conflicts between playing major college football and being a full-time student, and he said:
Look, football and school don't go together. They just don't. Trying to do both is like trying to do two full-time jobs. There are guys who have no business being in school, but they're here because this is the path to the NFL. There's no other way. Then there's the other side that says raise the SAT eligibility requirements. OK, raise the SAT requirement at Alabama and see what kind of team they have. You lose athletes and then the product on the field suffers.
quote:
Some people have pulled out the Alabama portion of that quote and interpreted it as Rosen saying, more or less, “Look at these dumb Bama kids.” That doesn’t appear to be what he’s saying at all, though, when you zoom out and read it in context.

lol.
this kid has nothing. Watch the NCAA ban him from playing just to teach him a lesson on what true power actually is.

I get what he's saying but, for once, I would like one of these advocates to start talking about the legal and organizational consequences of what they are advocating and to understand that the NCAA is an organization that governs several hundred thousand athletes. There just aren't that many Alabama footballs and UCLA basketballs.
Most everyone speaking out on this issue just seems to be an iconoclast for its own sake and really haven't thought through the problem.

Oh I don't think he's wrong. But defends of the NCAA and folks in Alabama are freaking out on social media.

He should have just said
It would resonate more because now the Bama idiots just think he's mad a Bama.

quote:Yep. He actually should have said Major Football programs. They all drop requirements for players. Yes, even you Stanford and Notre Dame.......

But he is right. The student-athlete part of college football is largely a huge joke

He's absolutely right.

I mean he's not wrong
He isn't wrong, but I probably wouldn't draft him just because he sounds like a PR nightmare.

quote:of course he's saying that. But if all that were to happen, eventually it would come full circle to racism, SAT scores disproportionately blocking minority kids from college. That ought to work well.

I remember when the Butkus award winner Katzenmoyer was going to be ineligible for the season due to his grades...
So Ohio State came up with some sweet classes for him to take in the summer.
AndyKatzenmoyer, who needed to pull his overall grade point averageup to 2.0 (C) during two five-week summer terms so he could suitup for his junior season.
''It was a situation where he got into his major, then struggled in terms of the g.p.a. and needed to take electives to boost it,'' Geiger said. ''He needed to take courses he could be successful in.''
Katzenmoyer, a junior linebacker, revealed what summer school courses he was taking in an effort to pull up his grade-point average: Music, AIDS Awareness and Golf.
Like a large number athletes, he is forced to go to a school he might not otherwise bother attending simply because the road to the pro ranks dictates he do so.
As Katzenmoyer said, I'm not here to go to class, I'm here to play football.
SI has obtained copies of two anonymous letters--both signed"Sincerely, OSU Faculty"--that were sent to Ohio State presidentWilliam Kirwin last summer and that offer new details aboutAndy's excellent academic adventure. "The special treatmentfootball player Andy Katzenmoyer has received this summer inorder to be academically eligible is ridiculous," said the firstletter, dated Aug. 14.
The letter also questioned how Katzenmoyer, who it claimed hadearned a 1.72 average or lower in five of his seven semesters, was "suddenly able to perform at the scholar-athlete level(3.0)" for the first summer term, and how he'd been squeezedinto the golf class, which was full.
The second letter, dated Aug. 24, asked how, eight weeks intothe summer session, Katzenmoyer had been granted a grade changefor an art education class he had failed the previous spring."The academic integrity of this University has become a joke,"the letter concluded.
When asked to explain whyshe had changed Katzenmoyer's grade from an E (Ohio State'sversion of an F) to a C+ in the spring art course, Introductionto the Computer and the Visual Arts, teaching assistant PaulaDiMarco said, "This is uncomfortable. I really don't want totalk."

Oh, so he's racist.
PS - Yes, I see his point. Just using the logic that he and his ilk would no doubt use if someone they didn't like made the statement.

I can't wait for the NCAA just to say "Screw it, we're not paying you, but you can go straight to the NFL out of high-school if you wish."
