A professor at the University of Alabama Birmingham is on the brink of unveiling a new football helmet, with a completely new design.
“We changed everything,” says Professor Dean Sicking.
He tells KOIN 6 News his helmet is unlike anything being worn on the field today. Sicking says his new testing techniques and design will cut down on concussions. According to Sicking, the current safety standards for helmets are flawed.
“The standards are not designed to prevent and control or limit concussions. The standards were developed to prevent skull fractures. So the standards are doing exactly what they were designed to do, they just don’t do much to reduce concussions.”
The state of Alabama may have actually produced something good. It is about time.

I will go with this.
Has to be more credible than a PhD who is doing research and testing.

Nothing wrong with being skeptical. PhDs lie/mislead all the fricking time to continue to get grant money.

I've always been surprised by the lack of attention helmets get in the whole concussion argument. Improving them for concussions, better/newer materials, MAKING THE PLAYERS LATCH THE BUCKET TO THEIR frickNG HEAD SO IT CAN WORK AS DESIGNED, other things besides just changing all the rules
I think they should take the face masks off. You won't have people leading with their nose anymore

No, but you can design a helmet to displace the energy so that it is never transmitted to your skull. The guy that designed the helmet also designed the NASCAR SAFER track walls after Dale Sr died.
You can read more and watch videos here
To the guy that act for pics. They didn't release any read the article.

Sicking also wouldn’t say what the new helmet will look like but he did reveal one clue.
“We’re not talking about changing the shell, or changing any of the accouterments of the helmet. We’re talking about changing liners.”
The professor says his new helmet liner is in the final testing phase. He plans to unveil it early next year and thinks players will be wearing the new design next season.
“We think this helmet will make a significant difference.”
ETA: He also designed this road safety barrier

If this helmet works as advertised, UAB can fund their football program just off the royalties from the patent.

Sounds great but players won't want to wear it if it doesn't have enough 'swag'
I'm skeptical but hope he is on to something.

Exactly. I was just about to post this. Every wonder why most of the concussions happen when people hit the ground? The brain keeps moving, but the head doesn't. This helmet "MIGHT" do something with player to player collisions but nothing is going to stop the concussions from hitting the ground.
Go back and look at the Case Keenum play. He was hurt from hitting the ground not the player. This is just a marketing ploy to sell the patents.

it says designs "SAFER" football helmet, not "helmet that will completely eliminate concussions."
Don't be stupid

Another year another helmet break through. Yet the amount of concussions are not falling due to these awesome new helmets.
Here an article about "THE HELMET THAT CAN SAVE FOOTBALL"
LINK
Correct fit is more important than some helmet breakthrough. Padding can only do so much.
