New head baseball coach, assistant at Vandy most recently. Thoughts ?

And yes there's a thread on the Rant but that's more about Cannizaro

Great hire IMO. CWS experience and knows how to recruit at a private school. I think he's the man for the job. A lot of coaches from the Tim Corbin tree have had success as head coaches

Seems like a good hire, I'm not going to pretend to know a lot about the guy. I'd have been happier with Cannizaro

Unfortunately the Cannizzaro family didn't take it too well, his younger brother tweeted this to the Tulane AD

@TU_Dannen You hired the wrong guy, Troy. @GreenWaveBSB @FearTheWaveBlog

Yeah I saw that and heard some of the Cannizaro family has been trolling Tulane. I don't like it. Coaching is like any other profession, sometimes someone else gets hired instead of you. It happens, nothing personal. I'm sure Andy understands and I sincerely wish him the best.

he has no head coaching experience. he might turn out to be a great coach, but the jake geautrau (sp) experiment didn't work out so well, neither did the tendency to hire former players over the last few years of the Rick Jones era.
this guy has experience at a private, expensive school. i think this is a great hire

Cannizaro was a legitimately great candidate for that job.

* Former player
* Top assistant at a top program
* Huge praise from outside of the Tulane program
* Major support from within the Tulane program (Rick Jones, boosters close to program, former players)
* Expressed major interest in the job

Loyalty and love for school is a two way street. When Tulane passed on Cannizaro, it broke that loyalty. It can't reasonably expect Cannizaro to show any loyalty back to Tulane down the road.

Lots of Tulane people wanted Andy, but the thought seemed to be he is too green. if he takes that personally, that is too bad. I hope it is not the case and he can see that it was a rational decision.

FWIW, i bet under the Rick Dickson Andy gets the job. but Dannen has been doing a great job thus far.

We'll be looking for a new coach in 3 years or less when Jewett jumps to an SEC job.

i think like Pierce, it will need to be a top tier coaching job to leave. Where are the top SEC guys going?

It may end up being the right decision. But, Tulane turned its back on a legitimately viable candidate who was a Tulane guy. That doesn't make it the wrong decision, Jewett may end up being great. But, to expect no hard feelings or to have an expectation of loyalty from Cannizaro is foolish.

Of course he is going to take it personally. He is right to feel that way.

we will just have to agree to disagree. tulane isn't what it was 15 years ago, but it is still a pretty decent program and i don't think a guy with really limited experience should be too upset. riser probably had a better claim to the job.

that said, human nature is to get upset when you feel not wanted. that is why i said i hope he can see it was a rational decision.

That might be the only time in his life the Tulane job comes open and he has a chance to take it... and don't crown their AD before any of his new hires have even coached a game...

What is Jewett's head coaching experience?

I'm not saying Cannizaro was head and shoulders above Jewett...or even that he was a better candidate (obviously Tulane didn't think so). But, he's clearly in the same class.

Tulane turned down Cannizaro. How can that not be personal. And, how could Tulane reasonably expect Cannizaro to give "loyalty" down the road when Tulane passed on him at a time when he was a viable candidate?

Obviously Tulane did what it thinks was best. And, it may have been the right move. But, the Cannizaro option is now gone...as it should be.

Yea, a lot of people have crowned Dannen already. I like what he's done, especially Fritz. I think it was critical to get the football hire right and he got a guy who has won everywhere. The Dunleavy hire was nothing special, he might suck or he might be good. Nobody really knows how he'll do in college.
I think Jewett will be fine, Tulane can win in baseball, but we'll see how good he is.
