Title 9 will never go away.. And dont act like its just women's sports that lose money, its basically all sports besides Football and Men's basketball.
A very small percentage of athletic departments actually make a profit when it comes to their sports, yet they continue to pump millions year in and year out. Now that is something I will never understand

football scholarships then you must balance that with 100 scholarships for female athletics.
Not quite, you have to have an equal number of opportunities (in this case athletic scholarships), representative to your schools population.
So if your school is 70% men and 30% women you only need 30% as many scholarships for women as men

Qjenk, excellent assessment. Proponents of athletics argue they are the "front door" to the university; lots of publicity and a way to attract people to follow and become a part of the college.

all lose money.
And all of these sports have been on the chopping blocks for years. Opportunities for men in athletics has been restricted due to Title 9. It's a horrible law.

There is a wholly accurate post in this thread with more down votes than upvotes and an entirely false post with 4 up votes and 0 down votes. I love this place.

Does any female sport make any money?

This my friend is the root cause of the problem. Overall women sports lose Million's of dollars that college's have to eat yearly. But the free ride numbers they HAVE to give women because of Title 9 is ridiculous. This is why baseball has to suffer the 11.7 rule.
As stated earlier
1)The Majority of college sports lose money
2) College sports were never about profits. Basketball and especially football only became profitable for P5 schools relatively recently.
3) College football is the by far the biggest burden to a lot of colleges. The amount of money lost for none power 5 conference schools is stupid.
Eastern Michigan : 80% subsidies
Umass: 81% Subsidies
Georgia St: 84% Subsidies
These schools might have sustainable programs in DIV 2.
Schools are raising tuition to pay for football. Women's sports combined don't put you in debt like a football team with a low following. They are all dirt cheap compared to football.
4)I don't understand why a LSU fan is bitching about Title 9 costing them money. LSU athletics made 15 million in profits last year. You would of made even more if LSU wasn't the poster child runaway football staff salaries. I wonder if LSU still has the stupid clause in Les Miles contract that says that if he wins a national champion he must be the highest paid couch in the country. Its hard to believe LSU once had profits of 32 million in 2007.
Whats stopping LSU or other SEC teams from adding wrestling? Wrestling is one of the cheapest college sports in the country to maintain.... So is title 9 or money stopping LSU from starting a wrestling team.

I'd argue that it is not women's sports that are the root cause of the problem but rather the idea that college athletics are a business and formed to make money is ultimately the issue.

How the frick did you make it through fricking high school without learning how to use an apostrophe correctly?

nah it's that 50 D1 schools' athletic programs are viable and have potential to make money, and 300 are not
i don't even understand why half of LA programs still even exist

Men only getting a number of scholarships equal to their representation in the student body???!!!!!!!??!!!!
THE HORROR
I'm not sure why people are so horrified that schools have lose money on Women's golf as opposed to Men's Handball or League of Legends or whatever.

There are tons of mens sports that do not make money. Plenty sports can be cut on both sides. Keep womens softball though. great sport.

In fact, baseball programs dig a deeper financial hole than any other college sport, according to the NCAA. In 2012, the median deficit for a baseball team was $675,000, with swim teams following close behind at $555,000 and ice hockey at $530,000.

Georgia = $2.39 million loss
Kentucky = $1.91 million loss
Florida = $1.84 million loss
Tennessee = $1.16 million loss
Ole Miss = $803k loss
South Carolina = $668k loss
Auburn = break even
Missouri = break even
Miss. State = break even
Vandy = break even
Arkansas = $13k profit
Alabama = $64k profit
Texas A&M = $136k profit
LSU = $1.78 million profit
So combined, the SEC loses roughly $6 to $7 million on college baseball each year

Cut? no. Extremely de-emphasize spending? absolutely.
Correct.
It would also allow schools to take football out of the equation. Football is the only NCAA sport that consistently makes money. Men's Basketball turns a profit at some schools; Men's Baseball turns a profit at some schools but neither are as consistent as football. Therefore, schools really have to allocate 85 scholarships to football in order to stay fiscally solvent. Under Title IX, if a school has 240 available scholarships, 120 must go to women. That means men get 120 but have to give 85 to football leaving the remaining Men's sports with only 35.
Title IX has killed a lot of Men's programs.

I do. The interpretation of Title IX has it concerns college athletics is absurd and inequitable.

Which is fine but not at all applicable as it concerns Title IX and college athletics.

equality also doesn't mean the athletes with vaginas should be allowed 41% more scholarships, in my sport, than those sporting a penis. seriously i've seen guys with olympic trial times getting less scholarship money than bitches who barely have jr national qualifications. i'm almost positive they still allow 25% more women to qualify for ncaa championships in my sport as well. if you can point out the equality here i'd be willing to listen.
