We'll that didn't take long.

4 is great at some point will go to 8 and top 5 conference winners will get in and then 3 at large but until then 4 is great
Posted on 8/29/14 at 9:01 am to CalTiger53
All 3 of those points are idiotic

TAM/SC game shows how wrong the experts could be and the final 4 teams are selected by those experts

I would love to see a 16 team playoff, but I would be satisfied with 8. The big 5 conference champs receive automatic bids, a couple of highly ranked bubble teams, and the highest ranked smaller conference team if they finish ranked in the top 8. Something like that should keep everyone happy.
I have always thought this is the best way...because the really good conferences have a chance to get their multiple good teams in it....
4 will not be enough...and it will ruin the next couple of years...book it...

- 8 teams
- 5 conf champions and the 3 highest ranked at larges using the BCS formula
- Rank them 1-8 using BCS formula
- Round of 8 (first 4 games) are played January 1st on top 4 teams campuses
- Round of 4 (2 games) played in rotating BCS bowls on January 7th
- Round of 2 (title game) played in rotating BCS bowl on January 14th
This satisfies playoff need, conference championship importance, timeline for student athletes, brings major money to top 4 teams with onsite games, and still uses the BCS games.

It really blows my mind that there are people that actually follow college football that think this way. I'm still waiting for someone to point out the team that finished #5 one year that really got screwed out of a title shot.

it is pretty amazing. sad, but pretty amazing.

The point should be that the 4 most deserving teams play for the title. November should largely be de-facto elimination games. The teams with the best seasons should get in. If Mich State wins the Big 10 at 12-1 while an undefeated Auburn loses the Iron Bowl with a trip to Atlanta on the line, Mich State should go over Auburn all day long, regardless of whether the consensus thought is that Auburn is a better team.
A 12-1 Michigan State team that won the Big 10 would always go in ahead of 1 loss SEC team that did not win the conference due to the strength of the Big 10.
The same can't be said for the ACC or Big 12. A 1 loss PAC 12 champion would likely also jump a 1 loss SEC non champion.
The real debate is when most of the conference champions have 2 losses. Then a 1 loss SEC team should definitely be considered against them even if they lost a game in November.

I'm not for a playoff, but I'm certainly not for expanding it even more. It's great having the early games mean so much. 4 team playoff doesn't diminish the regular season, but doubling it certainly will. Unfortunately it will be expanded though.

1- South Carolina NC hope is most likely over and the rest of regular season games could me meaningless specially if they lose another early
Well if you don't want your season to end don't lose two early games or get blown out at home.

2- SEC West seems to be loaded and there is no chance 2 teams or more are selected from SEC west
Playing in the SEC pretty much assures if you win it you are in. Other conferences don't have that guarantee.

3- TAM/SC game shows how wrong the experts could be and the final 4 teams are selected by those experts
Well pre-season predictions are certainly not as clear as after a team has 12-13 games on its resume for people see.
In short, terrible thread.

blows my mind as just the opposite, you obviously dont believe that the SEC is the best conference if you think otherwise, some years the third best team in our conference can when the national title...ex Bama beating us a few years ago.
what happens if they dont get that chance because of conference champions tie ins?...you can bet your arse we would have had another title flag hanging from tiger stadium...it can just as easily have been reversed as well...
what if we were number 5 with one loss and four other conference champions were ahead of us and no one from the SEC got in because we all beat up on each other..?.. what i want is an undisputed champion crowned on the field...Top 8 should go to the playoff....They should have started with 6, not 4.

IMO this is an argument against letting polls or experts pick the "best" teams and instead using objective criteria
Even when you have a whole season's worth of data it still isn't enough to predict unexpected results among even the most observed teams (e.g. tOSU/Miami, USC/Texas, tOSU/Florida, or even Alabama/OU last year). What this should tell you IMO is a system with objective criteria instead of polls might be a more fair and more objective system.

Move it to the top 6 teams. 1 & 2 get a first round bye (keeps the reg season games important).
Posted on 8/29/14 at 4:19 pm to Mickey Goldmill
I am happy with four.. We are getting greedy now considering it always was just two teams.. I like the regular season to mean so much thank you. I still don't like the idea of a committee selecting the four teams

Should NEVER be more than a 4 team playoff. We are fricking with the regular season too much as it is.

They go undefeated the rest of the way, they are in as a 1-loss SEC champ.
Will that happen? Not unless they are vastly better than they were last night.
ETA - But should be 8 teams, yeah. 5 conf champions, 3 at large. 8 teams allows for the highest ranked champion from the little 5 to get in as an at-large if they have a great record. Some years you can make an argument that a little 5 team is a top 8 team. Rarely can you make the argument that a little 5 team is a top 4 team.
8 teams still makes winning games in the regular season and winning your conference very important.
16 dilutes the shite out of the playoffs. Would be garbage. Almost all 2-loss teams and a bunch of 3-loss teams would be in. No. Just no.

Dude SC got their arse beat at home. Can't think of any reason why they should play for an NC after that performance.
