This is my biggest problem with it. It either is or it isn't...taking 6 minutes to overturn a play where a player is out by 5 steps and doesn't even attempt to slide is such a bastardization of the rule and the game
ETA: did it look like the ump told the Marlins coach "I agree with you...it's bullshite" to anyone else?

I really hope he doesn't get in trouble for that. It's nice to see an umpire actually stand up for a team like that.

It's just a terrible rule, he has to move that way to get the ball and then he's actually in possession with it before the runner even gets near him.

He was blocking the plate before he moved to get the ball.
It was actually a text book block that was taught for over 100 years.

Before he moved to get the ball he was standing behind the plate. Ball crosses over the IF then he moves to get the ball which happens to be towards the third base side.

Look again, he was in front of the plate then moved in position to get the ball, which was blocking the plate.

He was in perfect position in front of and behind the plate and could have caught the ball where he was. He intentionally moved forward to block the plate (textbook blocking). He waited til he knew the ball would be on target before he made his move to block.
I agree it's a stupid rule that takes away an exciting play at the plate. If anything they should just make everyone slide into home if there is a close play and not allow runners to initiate contact and not let catchers initiate contact.
Incidental contact will happen, but you won't get a Posey situation with those rules.

I'm sure the Reds fans remember the similar play earlier in the season when it was a force play at the plate against the Reds. Same thing except a force out. This play doesn't bother me near as much as that one.

Good call. Catchers can learn to make the play without blocking just like all the other infielders.

He probably challenges more plays than anyone in the league. If it's borderline at all, that dude is jogging out there and looking for a review. He's lost more than he's won, for sure.

After he got the overturn in Pittsburgh, he just said he's challenging every play at the plate. Not a bad idea really. I don't mind the rule other than force plays should be excluded from the rule.
