I agree what you're saying. Technically, he was blocking the plate before possession. The rule just sucks.

I've seen some odd calls due to this rule, but he clearly put his foot out to block the plate before the ball got there. It had nothing to do with the ball taking him in that path.

Rule changed, catchers need to learn to adapt, its gonna be hard but most people have done it just fine.

I have no problem with that call. If you can't run over the catcher then he should not be in the base path.

Yeah, he definitely was blocking the plate without the ball. It was almost the same situation where Posey got hurt, but Cozart didn't come in hot and go for his head.

There easily could have been a knee injury for Mathis there if Cozart came in hard.

That's what they are trying to avoid, and this is what happens.

It is what it is.

Again, by rule it was the right call.

It's just a shitty rule.

You want collisions or you want to change the rule?

I just don't see how they can word it without being odd. MLB has said to the players, don't run over the guys and we will protect you, so i think they are a little bias to the runners but this was blatant.

I hate it. They need to pitch this one out.

I've been watching a ton of MLB this past week and saw several cases they reviewed and technically could have reversed the call, but they let it stand with an out.

They really just need to get rid of this rule all together.

I have no problem with the collision at home. It's always been part of the game and while there have been injuries, they are rare. If George Kottaras gets hurt instead of Buster Posey, this rule change is never made. That's a fact.

If catchers are worried about getting hurt, wear shoulder pads and shite. Put the risk on the runner and make him decide if he wants to take on a fully armored mofo at the plate.

Catchers would be a lot less willing to stick a foot or leg out in front of an oncoming runner if they didn't have those shin guards on. I just think with injuries and what we now have learned about concussions, this rule is necessary.

If they aren't going to allow collisions, the catcher can't block the plate. It's not difficult for position players to not block the bases, and it's not hard for a catcher to not block the plate.
This.

There isn't anything wrong with the rule--only with some players' failure to adapt and adjust.
