the entire NBA wouldn't be, along the same logic

no, MOST of the NBA players

THATS THE POINT

but the discussion isn't about that

it's about NBA "star" v/ NBA "unknown star", which means that you have to show an interest in following the NBA to know either set. the amount of following the player has is proportionate to the total share of US sporting audience, comparatively.

You dont need to follow the NBA to have heard of LeBron.

since the NBA isn't as popular as he thinks, none of the NBA players do

nope

LeBron has it, Durant a little bit, and Blake (but this is partly b/c he is in LA and commercials) all have crossover appeal at this point.

so out of the entire league, one player "has it" and 2 players may have it. yeah you're really proving me wrong, man

YES

there are very few players in each sport that have crossover appeal to the point that people will watch b/c its THEM doing the event and not b/c they already enjoy the sport.

no non NBA fan hears Paul George will be in the dunk contest and goes "OH shite, THATS MUST SEE TV!"

The anointed one coming in to show that not only is he the best in game player but the best dunker however? Yea, that's way better drama and will draw in people who wouldn't normally watch.

a. then this isn't about using "stars", it's about just Lebron

b. the NBA Dunk contest NEVER had that level of participation except for TWO YEARS in the 80s. this era of the stars (Especially as you define them) competing in the dunk contest never really existed

other than that 2 year stretch of MJ in the mid-late 80s, how many times did the best, most marketable player in the NBA compete in a dunk contest? which years?

So? MJ would have earned a ton of hate if he lost too. Didn't stop him.

MJ did it very early in his career and he wasn't "MJ" yet...

People who don't know Paul George, John Wall, or Damian Lillard would never watch the dunk contest in the first place, because people who wouldn't know them don't follow sports, even casually :

MJ would have never become MJ if he had to deal with the modern media. the media of the 80s/90s protected him

There is absolutely no way we have of knowing that other than opinion

People liking or disliking him would have had no bearing on his ability to play basketball or win championships

you're right, but it is undisputed fact that the media protected him back in the day

hell the general public still doesn't know what kind of a manic douchebag MJ was/is

True, there is no doubt he's one of if not the biggest a-hole/narcissist of an athlete ever, but that wouldn't stop me from recognizing him as the greatest basketball player so far

What do you mean when you say " he wouldn't have become MJ"? You mean as far as winning championships or his brand off the court?

Maybe so, but someone who follows the NBA would still recognize him as the GOAT IMO simply based off his rings and stats and the way he played the game. But I guess well never know

ETA: as seen with LeBron, winning can help a lot in changing perception

Look at it this way, I went with my gal last night and there was not a single person in the slam dunk contest that she knew. She knew some of the guys in the other competitions. She really likes Stephen Curry and after last night, she became a fan of Chris Bosh.
The dunk contest was crap. The 90 seconds of team dunks was horrible. Each player only getting ONE dunk after that was bullshite. Every single person walking out of the arena last night was disappointed, including us.
After the East won as a team, George, Wall and Ross should have each gotten a chance to dunk again to see who the overall champion was.

EDIT: She did know who John Wall was only because of his dancing. She didn't know what team he played for though.

I have at least three personal friends who watched last night who probably haven't watched 3 games all season.

I wonder if the format had anything to do with the players not wanting to do any more dunks. They always bitch about wanting time off to relax and that's why they don't do the contests. Maybe the one dunk thing was a compromise. I know why the superstar guys like Lebron and Durant don't do it though...ego...they don't want to deal with the outside chance that they might get beat.

Same here, but they all know who Paul George, Wall, and Lillard are simply because of sportscenter

All they needed to do was have the three guys on the east squad go at it in one more round for dunk contest champ

That 90 sec freestyle thing was garbage

NBA fans like you and me know who Wall, Lillard, and Paul George are. I was saying that my gal did not know a single person in the dunk contest, besides Shaq and Drake. She's been to games with me and watches it on tv with me sometimes. She knows all the big stars like Lebron, Durant, and Kobe. She also knows a lot of "B level" stars like Harden, Dirk, Pau Gasol, Carmello, Dwight Howard, Curry etc.
