Report: Liberty Fined Record $500K for Chartering Flights During 2021 WNBA Season

Bleacherreport

Apparently the Liberty violated the CBA. There have been discussions about dissolving the team over this.

quote:

Howard Megdal of Sports Illustrated reported the league originally planned to fine the team $1 million, but the total was reduced by an appeal. What's more, Liberty executive Oliver Weisberg was removed from the WNBA's executive committee as part of the punishments.

quote:

Megdal reported that WNBA general counsel Jamin Dershowitz even "floated" penalties such as losing "every draft pick you have ever seen," suspending the team governors and possibly even "termination of the franchise."

My favorite part of the article:

quote:

The inability to charter flights has been a controversial topic in the WNBA, and Megdal reported the Liberty pushed forward an unofficial proposal to the WNBA Board of Governors in September to make it the default way of traveling for the league.

However, it did not receive majority support.

"I think what charter flights represent in the world of sports is it gives you a little bit of validation," Seattle Storm guard Sue Bird said in February when explaining the importance of the issue. "It's saying that your league is so successful, it has the finances to charter flights, which is incredibly expensive. There's not many businesses that just charter flights left and right. ... So I think for a lot of us, it would just be an indicator of that. It'd be an indicator of financial success."

News flash, the league isn't successful. It's propped up by the NBA. If it were another business, it would cease to exist.

Which your league isn't. Not even close.

Next topic.

If it weren't for this boards obsession with pointing them out, I'd have completely forgotten the WNBA existed long ago.

Pony up, daddy NBA. Charter these flights for these women who attract a couple hundred fans for every game.

Validate their (lack of) success!!!!!

There are 100+ college basketball teams that charter or own their plane.

*THE* pro women’s league wants to terminate the NYC team for doing what even Fordham does.

That's a great point. Which NBA team is actually getting the penalty for this WNBA transgression?

Negative. They want to punish them for violating the collective bargaining agreement in a way that presumably gave them a competitive advantage.

Of course the best thing to do is shut the whole money losing farce of a league down.

Fordham likely charters its own flights based on the budget for athletics.

WNBA teams don’t bring in money, period, so they exist only as long as the NBA decides they are a PR bonus.

Brooklyn Nets, as the same guy is a majority owner of both teams.

Why don't they play all their games in a bubble site and charter flights for their fans? It'd be cheaper.

Is the franchise financially successful or not? If they can actually afford to charter, let them. I’m assuming this is either the franchise can’t afford it, or the other franchises can’t and are jealous.

There’s a weird aspect to the WNBA where they make themselves very obviously beggars, and it seems they want to keep that status. The WNBA has a somewhat desireable stance as the only major womens pro sports league in America. Anyone who wants to support womens pro sports as a pro feminist thing essentially has to support the WNBA. There’s no WNFL or WMLB

Oh ffs. It's like being a trust fund shite head and telling everyone you made the money through business.

These bitches already get too much money. Time for this shitty league to dissolve.

If every team chartered a 747, they could bring the entire crowd with them.

Of course they can't. The NBA subsidizes the league. These stupid women are always wanting more without recognizing that no one cares about their league.

Probably make more money than WNBA teams.

Also, they fly fewer times per year.
