It's okay to not like Federer. I've never liked the guy.

I'll acknowledge that he's a legend, and I'll even concede he's great for the sport, but that doesn't mean I have to like him.

Interesting article on Height trends and Tennis.

Yeah, it's all about movement. The reason 6-1 guys have dominated tennis since 1990 isn't necessarily because that's the optimum height but because generally the movement starts to drop off as you get taller than that. And I will argue with anyone willing to listen that the reason that Sampras, Nadal, and Federer had so much success is because of their movement as much as their ballstriking.

Height is really only a problem in tennis if it comes at the expense of movement. It isn't that John Isner is too tall; it's that he doesn't move well enough. Now that they're making 6-8 dudes who move like point guards (see James, Lebron), don't be surprised when the average height of the best tennis players goes up.

I actually don't love this trend, though. Taller guys means bigger serves, and serves can get so good that they are basically unreturnable (see Isner, John). And when guys are hitting serves like that, it means tennis is going to look a lot more like the one-strike game that I really can't stand and that made me fall out of love with the game for years.*

No. Nadal is one of the greatest of all time and rarely loses. My complaint with him is he has almost never had a loss where injury hasn't been the excuse.

AO has always been Nadals worst tourney, but that match makes me nervous. Nadal played awful, Brdych played flawless. Hopefully he's just shaking. The rust off.

Nadal didn't stay long enough on the court to claim an injury. But like I said in my other posts, Nadal will take the high road in his press conference and give credit to the opponent and defect any blame for an injury. Makes you like the guy. It's the days later when quotes from him or Toni surface with the injury or fatigue excuses. So if he made any comments last night giving Berdych complements, that certainly wouldn't be unusual or shouldn't be a surprise.

Plus, he and his camp launched the preemptive "back isn't 100% excuse" prior to the start of the tournament anyway. Other than his "hand tension" episode, I never saw one instance where he seemed to show signs of back pain.

Murray 6/1 to win the tournament in my back pocket is nice to have.

I like Nishikori and Keys. Also think Maria's odds are too short.

This is so overblown on this board. Milos has a top 20 forehand and an above average backhand as well. He also moves extremely well for a big guy. He knows he has a monster serve, so his game plan is to be as aggressive as possible on groundstrokes, in order for his opponent to feel absolutely no rhythm.

He does not move extremely well for a big guy. Janowicz moves extremely well for a big guy. Raonic tries to avoid tripping over his own feet as he awkwardly plods around the court.

Above average, as in better than the average 4.0 player? Maybe.

Uncle Toni is not going to the press in a week. You're reaching.

Well, going to have to say you may not have the best eye for tennis

It would make me nervous if it had been a movement thing, but it wasn't. Dude was just hitting the ball short, dumping routine backhands into the net, and doing very little with his serve. He just didn't play that well. I should have seen it coming but I'm blinded by my Rafa manlove.*

If thinking Milos Raonic moves well is a requirement for a good eye for tennis, then I don't want one.

I don't know, man. subtle brag on/ I've seen Milos three times in person and he seems pretty oafish to me. The backhand used to be awful, but is getting better. I think he is still almost all serve and forehand. That said, he can be a matchup problem for a few guys. He caused Nole fits in Rome last year. Over the course of five sets, I just don't see him beating a guy with a return like Nole or Murray.

Good God the guy is 6/5 220 lbs and still manages to move around the baseline and has an unreal quick step to get around his backhand and his first step towards the net is also very good
