And it's pretty bad.

Football Favoritism at F.S.U.: The Price One Teacher Paid

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — As the Florida State University football team was marching to a national title in the fall of 2013, the school was investigating allegations of academic favoritism involving a half-dozen of its leading players, including one who scored the winning touchdown in the championship game.

The inquiry, previously unreported, stemmed from a complaint by a teaching assistant who said she felt pressured to give special breaks to athletes in online hospitality courses on coffee, tea and wine, where some handed in plagiarized work and disregarded assignments and quizzes. The assistant, a 47-year-old doctoral student named Christina Suggs, provided emails and other evidence in late August 2013 to the Florida State inspector general, an independent office. But her case was soon taken over by the university’s attorney.

And we put these athletes on a pedestal here in the States.

I mean, are you fricking kidding me? I know there will always be some bullshite filler classes, but hospitality classes on coffee, wine and tea? That's bad. Real bad.

Eta - I know these players aren't there for their academic prowess, but can we at least get some bullshite classes that at least look halfway legit?

Everyone knows this goes on but it's still a very bad look when the documentation is laid out like in the NYT. This isn't the first time this same issue has come up at FSU. Wasn't there an article where the teachers said they were scared of the players?

The 47 year old coffee, tea and wine doctorate is just now realizing this is the way the world works?

About 70% of players on a college football team aren't there for college. I've been around enough college athletes that it I know how broken the system is. All these guys have to do is go to class and they will pass.

I know these guys aren't there to play school but Jesus Christ.

Seems like taking the time to plagiarize that stuff is making it unnecessarily tough on yourself, as opposed to just making some bullshite up.

"Brazilian coffee is one of few places that has a carnival and the coffee place a major role just as much as the dancing and the food."

-Sentence from an FSU player's paper on coffee. This is what we call functionally illiterate.

Every school should have a sports degree path for players. It is so disingenuous for anyone to think that the lionshare of kids are there for any other purpose.

Not true. Stanford does not have fake majors. Ditto Duke, Notre Dame, Rice, among others.

I think athletes (and other students) should be allowed to major in "Life".

Full courses about mortgages, credit scores, starting and running small businesses, tax codes, etc.

Doubt it.

Vanderbilt for sure does. I know several former athletes from there that work at my company.

As does UVA and UNC (lol)
