Well, this is just a simple annuity.
The break even for the Mets was around 8% interest rate, which is not unreasonable when the contract was signed.

The market had averaged around 15% throughout the 90's. And even if you factor in the terrible 00's, the historical average is still above 10%.

Braves still paying Bruce Sutter for another 5 years, and then owe him a 9Million dollar bonus after contract finally runs out.

That was the deal that keeps on paying.
