The Most Coveted Ball in Golf Is From Costco (WSJ)

Yet another story of this "odd ball". LINK
Costco, the warehouse retail giant, first began selling golf balls last fall, under its Kirkland Signature brand that is affixed to a wide range of products and carries discount prices. Available for $29.99 for two dozen, the balls instantly ranked among the cheapest on the market.
But what made the balls a hot item among fanatical golfers is the revelation that, by some accounts, they perform like rivals that sell for more than twice as much.
That idea sent shock waves through a billion-dollar industry, left Costco out of stock for weeks at a time and caused secondary-market prices for the ball to soar. Its popularity is threatening one of the sport’s long-held consumer beliefs: when it comes to the quality of golf balls, you generally get what you pay for.

quote:Maybe not. "The balls have been out of stock for much of the past two months, save for a few fleeting spurts of availability. Within the past week, Costco removed the listing for them from its website. It is unclear when or even if they will be in stock again."

He's right. Read an article about that a couple of days ago. Bummer.
Crocka had good things to say about it the first time it was first posted here in November or December.

My brother has been the president of three major athletic equipment brands plus had his own failed start-up in the business. He told me that Costco demands the very best product you can produce or they will walk away.
In before "subtle brag." He got all of the ambition genes in the family and I'm just a poor schmuck.

Their Kirkland brand coffee is also far better than Starbucks, Petes, etc.

I played with them and they are no different than a pro v1x or other comparable urethane covered balls.. I was curious and looked into how they were sold for so cheap and saw that the suspicion is that they bought a bunch of overruns from a manufacturer and thus aren't able to continue producing them at the price sold..

quote:I stand by what I said before. I don't know the reason why Costco stopped selling them. Your reason makes as much sense as any other I've heard. I only know what I know.

I can believe this. Kirkland red wine is made the same way. High dollar wineries sell excess wine to Costco. Pop a cork of Kirkland cab? Hell, you may be drinking Far Niente .

I did try a new golf ball the other day which I ended up liking a lot. That ball is the Wilson Staff Duo and Duo Spin. I usually play Pro V1x and I will pick these up next time I need some new balls. They felt really soft around the green and fantastic off the tee box.
