The Greatest Dynasty that never was

I watched the ESPN 30 for 30 documentary "Four Falls of Buffalo" last night on Netflix. The documentary really put into perspective how the Buffalo Bills of the early 1990's could have been one of the greatest dynasties in sports history, but inexplicably just could not win the big game, losing a stunning four Super Bowls in a row.
I was very young during this period, so I don't personally remember it, but for those of you who remembers this era, what do you think of the Bills and how they had a rare opportunity to create a dynasty, yet fell short four years in a row?
I personally feel bad for the Bills and their fans, their bad luck in the Super Bowls and the fact they haven't reached the playoffs since 1999... wow, just bad fortune for this franchise. I hope they can turn it around soon.

They weren't a potential dynasty. The AFC at that time was abysmal. Jim Mora's Saints probably would have won the AFC multiple times in the late 80's-early 90's. Wild card teams from the NFC would have been Super Bowl teams in the AFC.

The Super Bowl was the NFC Championship Game in the mid-80s through the mid-90s.

But what the doc points out and what I didn't know.
The Bills were 10-2 against the NFC during that run.
I do think, nobody was beating the 1993 Cowboys...but Buffalo certainly could have beaten the Giants (they did previously that year). Had a shot at 1994 Cowboys.

Assuming you mean the '93 Cowboys? '94 Cowboys didn't make the SB.

I remember them having good teams back then. Thurman Thomas was a beast. They had plenty of talent and we're always a possibility of knocking someone off but they just could never get it all together.

Sure, but who did they play? The perennial AFC playoff teams during that time were teams like the Bills, Broncos, Chiefs, and Bengals - and trust me when I say you only had to watch them play to realize they were going to get destroyed by whatever team came out of the NFC.
The 49ers, Cowboys, Giants, Redskins - there really wasn't a single AFC team as good as one of these teams at that time.

Padded their record on a bad division, then used home field and extreme weather in the playoffs.

That documentary must be really confusing to people in Africa. They have all the championship gear from those years.

I remember their run and I regard them as losers since the last three Superbowls were blowout losses. I remember being disappointed that they made the 3rd and 4th ones since you figured they were going to get blown out.

The 1990 team was their best team and was one of the best teams ever that didn't win the Super Bowl.
1991 was 1990 2.0, but they were exposed and their offense was held to a 10-7 in the AFCCG by the Broncos and were lucky to get out alive. That was the peak.
1992 was lucky to be there. That was year of the 32-point comeback against the Oilers. The Dolphins won the East and the Bills had to win 2 on the road to get there.
1993--at that point they were just being sadistic. It was the Cowboys' world and they were the team that everybody knew was going to lose again.

LSU has won a title since 05' Bama, and should have won another in 2012, but we had the misfortune of playing you guys in the NC. LSU received the impossible task of having to beat Alabama twice in a year, beating them once that year was not enough.

I was happy that Scott Norwood participated in the film. I'm sure he probably took a lot of heat, but it does seem that Buffalo fans handled it well.

this ... the '90 team could've won a super bowl during that time, but '91 had almost no chance and the next two had zero chance ... nfc was unstoppable during that run ... still impressive they won 4 straight afc titles, but denver won 3 straight, i think, so it wasn't unprecedented ...

Not saying they would have won them all, but that first Super Bowl haunted them. I think if they won that one they would have gotten at least one more. After that it was like well here we go again.

That was because they played one of the all-time greatest teams ever in the 1991 Redskins. Had they played an ordinary Super Bowl team, they could have pulled it off, maybe.
That was the thing about the NFC in the mid 80s-early 90s. It wasn't so much that the whole conference was dominant. It was that every year one of the greatest single-season teams ever came out of the NFC.
84 49ers
85 Bears
86 Giants
89 49ers
91 Redskins
The single-season excellence that those teams had were sick. 2 18-1 teams and 3 17-2 teams.
The 1990 team should have won.
The 1992 team could have won if things went their way because the Cowboys were young and they were experienced.
1991 and 1993 just weren't happening. Period.

The rest, yes. Especially the Niners and Cowboys - they owned the late 80's and early 90's.
But Giants don't belong in that list...they were always beatable by an AFC team. Bills choked that first SB away, they had beaten the Giants earlier in the year. Giants were never a super team in the 80's.
They got a SB berth because Roger Craig fumbled the ball while the Niners were running out the clock...and Montana was out of the game.
If Craig doesn't fumble the game away in the closing minutes and Montana plays the full game - then you have Niners vs. Bills and probably a blowout.

Cincinnati won the AFC some where towards the end of the 80's. But you are right, Denver made 2 SB appearances in a row then Cincinnati made it after that.
then Denver got back to the SB only to get destroyed by the 49ers.
Denver was never really close in any of their Super Bowls in the 80's.
at least the Bills had a chance on the last play against the Giants. One play in that game that I remember well was when Bruce Smith sacked Jeff Hostetler for a safety. When they showed a replay you could see just how close Hostetler was to fumbling the ball but some how he held on. I think he was able to get both of his hands back on the ball to prevent the fumble. Heads up play really... that game could swung totally different and would have put the Giants down 17-3 as opposed to just 12-3.
