The ATL Thread 8/5: Roster Moves Galore (7:10pm vs Miami)

Max Fried called up from Mississippi and will work out of the bullpen as our long relief guy. Also we traded Sean Rodriguez to the Pirates for Connor Joe, infielder and 2014 first round pick, who is currently in AA. Joe isn't a particularly great return but we get rid of S-Rod's contract and make some room in our cluttered infield.
Hopefully we will continue to jettison veterans and their contracts in the near future.

Love dumping S Rod. Who takes the 40 and 25 spots? D Petey would be interesting while Kemp is down. Has to be added to 40 man this offseason anyway.
Don't think Dansby is back til Phillips is sent somewhere.

Fried has been very impressive since they shut him down a couple months ago. No runs over 10 innings in his last 3 starts.

I don't like calling Fried up if he isn't gonna start. He should just stay in AA the rest of the year.

quote:He's almost at the 90 inning mark in a season where he's already dealt with some injuries, don't think the FO was going to tax him much more. This gets him some seasoning and helps us decide what to do with him this offseason, I'm not totally against it.

I liked the Sean Rodriguez move. I feel like we rushed him back to the ML club anyways. Plus we already have a crowded infield as it is.

I also like the Rodriguez move because we don't know if he will ever be the same player.

I really think this S-Rod move, saving almost 6 mil next year, puts us in line to go after Moustakas in the offseason. He's been a nice hitter the past 2 1/2 years and his lefty stroke would be great at SunTrust. Plus, he is young and fits our timeline.

Bunch of other small moves. Like trading Randy Ventura for 1.25 in international slot money. (Basically 4 300k prospects).
Jefrey Ramos promoted to Danville. Bradley Keller to Rome.

What are you thinking for Moustakas 4/65 or 5/85?
I would probably pass. I don't think they are contenders next year and locking up a 29 year old to a 5 year deal when you aren't one piece away is a little too risky.
Dumping Markakis and Kemp is my only real goal for the offseason along with upgrading the rotation.
A Machado trade makes a lot of sense but the extension would be very costly obviously.

I almost feel like Moose is akin to signing Kakes.

Agreed. Not in favor of adding long term commitments yet unless you can get a real cornerstone.
Machado would fit that bill obviously and there will probably one or two other guys on the market that fit that bill.

5/90 is what came to mind for Moustakas.....
Sandoval went 5/95 in 2014
Todd Frazier signed 1/12 in his last year of arb this year
Kyle Seager went for 7/100 in 2015
Nolan Arenado signed off two year of arb for 2/29.5
After seeing these, we might could get him at 5/80, or 4/70 depending on what he wants.
If there was anyway we could get Machado(unlikely) and then sign him to a deal(more unlikely), Id be for it.

If you believe in Riley, like I think the Braves do, Moose just doesn't make sense. Now, if you can get him for 3 years (highly unlikely) and let KM develop that is a different story.

If he would take a 3 year deal, I would go 3/65 to get him to do it. Yeah its 20 mil, but with the amount of rookies and young players we will have on the 40, and with a new stadium, and better tv contact, we should have the money to move our payroll from $122 this year to around $140 in a couple years.

Only 2 starts, but my favorite lottery pick,is dealing in Danville.
Huascar Ynoa
8 IP, 1.13 ERA, 3.52 FIP, 13.5 K/9, 5.63 BB/9
Walks are a little up, but I dont expect anything less from a young kid with less than 150 innings experience in the minors. This is the guy I wanted from Minnesota. He's going to be a major leaguer.

Got one at a Gwinnett game in May for like $25. Probably $35 or more everywhere else.
