Me too, we need to get on a nice losing streak so that our GM doesn't do something stupid like trading for some relief pitching in an attempt to "contend" this year. Need to lock up that top 10 pick so we can spend in free agency this offseason too.

Agree 100%.

I'm surprised Betts has dropped this far, he have signability concerns?

Not that I'm aware of. Tennessee had 3 possible top 75 signees (Hayes, Betts and another 3B Cabbage) and in an interview I heard last week Serrano basically conceded that Hayes and Betts would sign.

Braves take CA HS C Lucas Herbert.

quote:

Perhaps known initially as the guy catching top high school pitching prospect Kolby Allard, Herbert has made a name for himself as one of the best defensive catchers in the class.

Herbert has all the skills necessary to excel behind the plate. He has excellent catch and throw skills to go along with the natural leadership teams covet in a catcher. He moves well behind the plate, with excellent hands and blocking skills. While the UCLA commit is definitely defensively-oriented, he's certainly not a zero with the bat. He takes a clean path to the ball with a simple setup, using his extremely strong hands and wrists to drive the ball at times.

Catchers are always in high demand and there aren't a ton of quality ones in this Draft class. Herbert has the chance to be one of the early ones taken, with a profile of a solid glove-first regular with some pop.

Finally a pick that's not a gigantic reach. Hopefully he can hit enough to make it as a starter. Would rather have had Betts at 41 since I'm pretty sure we could have grabbed our last pick right now, but Herbert is a solid pick.

Like the draft Tampa has had so far with Whitley and Betts.

I'm definitely okay with it, but dammit I wanted Betts if we were going to take a CA HS catcher.

Probably going to go watch the Danville Braves play the Greeenville Astros later this month. Get a look at Cameron, Tucker and all these Braves picks (plus Fulenchek and others).

I'll reserve judgment, but don't care much about drafting a defensive first catcher in the 2nd round.

Texas A&M LHP AJ Minter is final pick. Coming off TJ.

quote:

Minter worked just 37 1/3 innings in relief during his first two years at Texas A&M while dealing with thoracic outlet syndrome. He positioned himself as early-round pick for 2015 by pitching well out of the bullpen for the U.S. collegiate national team last summer, then allowed just one run in four starts to open this spring. But his junior season ended there after he injured his elbow and needed Tommy John surgery.

When healthy, Minter can pitch at 93-95 mph and touch 97 with his fastball in short stints. He backs it up with a cutter that can creep into the low 90s and show more slider-like break at lower velocities. His changeup is more of a work in progress.

Given that he has been unable to stay healthy and has two effective pitches, Minter projects as a reliever in pro ball. He could become a set-up man if he can improve his command, and at worst he could offer more power than they typical lefty specialist.

What a joke of a draft so far.

Yeah. I mean obviously it's impossible to tell what we have especially when drafting 4 high schoolers, but definitely not a fan of any picks besides Allard.

But what the frick do I kmow. I've never seen these guys play.

The catcher pick was decent, but still stupid since we could have gone Betts at 41 and still gotten the 3B at our next pick pretty easily.

This entire draft reeks of our management trying to show how much smarter they are than everyone else to me. I've got a bad feeling we are going for the hustle/character/effort mode similar to what the Dbacks started preaching when they traded Upton and had the wheels fall off because of it.

Luckily we picked up enough talent in our trades we really only need to find 2 good bats from somewhere to compete, but it'll be hard to get them if we draft like this.

We have so many arms with potential that surely enough of them will work out that we can trade the surplus for some bats. At least that's what I'm hoping. Outside of Davidson and maybe D. Peterson (although that one seems like a total coin flip at this point), I don't even see the potential for an impact bat anywhere in the system.

Yeah, hopefully one of those can turn into a corner OF who can hit around 20 HRs and have a low .800ish OPS. But then we still need to find a 3B. And our RF will likely be sunk cost by 2017 as well.

My issue with the trading pitching for bats is that it just never happens these days, and if it does the impact bat is likely to be almost a FA, which doesn't really help a team with financial limitations like us. Impact bats are just way more valuable and predictable than pitching.

Personally if the Dodgers wind up needing pitching down the stretch I'd like to see us try and peel Seager away from them. Maybe Miller and Chris Johnson for Seager + prospects (combined with throwing the bank at Price this offseason) or try and move Wood for Seager.

Yeah, I really would have liked to see us target some bats early.

Hate to say it, but hopefully we'll have another crack at things in the top 10 or better next year.

Securing that top 10 pick is absolutely crucial as you said.
