So, basically a .500 team.

That's what most Astros fans thought we'd be this year, then next year contending for the playoffs. We're playing with house money this year.

Knew they would come down to Earth eventually. They were playing out of their minds in the first half.

Most people besides Astrotards said that they would fall off. Given their numbers, they were incredibly lucky to be winning early in the year.

To be fair we have been without one of our best players. But that number doesn't shock me

These numbers?

ETA: 3rd Best team by BaseRuns and 4th best team by Pythagorean

I don't think many Astros fans are guaranteeing a WS win, but we are what we are, really good team at home, not so good on the road, and leading the division by 2.5 games

Or the fact that they are ranked fourth to last in all of baseball in team batting average. Earlier in the year they had about 7 everyday starters that were around .220. Also to go along with their 21 ranking in OBP.
Not saying the Astros won't be good in the future, but yeah they were getting lucky earlier this year. You said yourself this wasn't supposed to be their year. They were just hitting an abnormal amount of home runs.

It is a 162 game season....it doesn't matter when you win them....as long as you win more than the other teams in the division.

Lucky for y'all that they're no longer in the NL central. 64-55 is good enough for 4th place.

Base runs and run differential tell you way more about a team than batting average. If anything, the Astros record understates how well they have played.

I'll answer it, they are 17-21 since losing Springer. Go back to a DAT thread around the time of the injury. The consensus was "Hang on for dear life until we get springer back."

If you had told most Astros fans, Springer is coming back in around a week and you have a 2.5 game lead in the division. There is not a single fan who wouldn't have taken that.

Gomez was in a 1-21 slump with the one hit being a bunt. He's not the same player for last year but he's going to heat up.

I don't think the Astros are going to win the World Series but the talent is there for a playoff run.

I'm an Astrotard and even I'm not expecting a World Series this year. Doesn't mean I'm not going to be hoping for one.

They have already exceeded my expectations for this season and are in a good position to make the postseason for the first time in 10 years, I'm ecstatic for just that alone.

Lately there have been several players hitting below their average, mainly CarGo, and I don't expect the slump to last forever. With Springer coming back soon also I like the teams chances of making the playoffs and at that point anything can happen.

Now that they are in this position, as a fan I don't have to be rational, I'm going to be cheering for them to go all the way of course.

After a couple 100 loss seasons are Astros fans supposed to not be excited to finally have competitive baseball again?

I mean I'm not surprised. They are basically a .500 team, or slightly above it so I'm not complaining. I'm glad they are still in 1st place at this point as well. They had an awesome arse April so I expected them to come down to earth. Hope they go a win streak though heading into September.

Believe it or not, since the All-Star break their offense has been above average.. They have a total of 517 runs scored all year in 119 games.. they've played 28 games since the all star break which means they should have scored roughly 121 runs in those 28 games. In fact, they've scored 126 runs since the break. Their pitching is shite though with only one healthy starter with an ERA+ above 100..

ETA: If you factor in the 10 games before the Break that Springer missed, they have scored 6 less runs than the season average for 38 games. (165:159)

So to blame the lack of wins on the loss of Springer is not entirely accurate.

This

And I will be more than happy with a playoff appearance this year. Nobody expected them to contend, including the fans. No matter what happens the future is still incredibly bright.

The 'Stros were built for 2016. This is just bonus. They are a young, fun team getting lots of experience. I don't expect a WS this year... if we make the playoffs I'll be happy, if we win the division I'll be double happy.
