Is having a handful of athletes from all around the country going to schools like IMG academy really a HUGE problem.

Well, in their defense, the school is losing exposure. Which means less money from attendance at games. They basically have built the guy to a certain point and feel like the player is stolen from them and IMG or a place like it, get the credit for it. And they feel it's important for the player, to experience high school in it's fullest. To have the friends, lifestyle and experiences that normal high school offers. Something that IMG and other places probably don't offer. The kids probably don't care. The ones who do value those things, often don't transfer.

Seems like one of those problems that really isn't a problem.

Doesn't IMG cost 50K or something?

Don't think it costs that for football players that are recruited. IMG started as a tennis academy.

I got a letter from them in high school promising to turn me from top 5 in my district to a state championship level. But it was something like $50,000/year (over 15 years ago) plus you were required to buy and replace all your gear every 3 months. Growing up I owned one pair of jeans and 8 shirts, there was no way we could afford it.

I'm pretty sure it's closer to $50,000 a semester now, and everyone there for tennis pays it. That keeps the doors open and allows for them to recruit football players on scholarship. Tennis is mainly played by rich middle to upper class kids who's parents can pay for it.

Coach Smith is not losing any players to IMG

That sure is the truth. He wants kids to stay local to TX high schools in order to stay local to TX colleges. Is recruiting for colleges that difficult now?

This could become an issue down the road but it's still the player and family's decision to make. A player can't afford to limit their exposure.

However, the IMG QB and WR for next season (Kellen Mond and Jhamon Ausbon) are both Baylor commitments from Texas.

Pointing out that kids going to IMG are committed to Baylor only enhances the shady nature of the whole ordeal.

I will say this - the kids should be allowed to go wherever they see fit, and kids leaving terrible situations to go there should be applauded. Tyler Shelvin is a heralded DT from Lafayette that was at Northside (bad situation) and transferred to Notre Dame (much better situation). IMG was rumored as a potential suitor as well. No one will blame you for leaving Northside for a better situation.

However, I won't blame a university that considers it a mark against the character of some of these kids/families in certain circumstances. Dylan Moses is a great example. Leaving a school like University High to go to IMG is another story all together. I don't believe it is ridiculous for a college program to question your integrity and/or your commitment to the team when you make a decision like that.

I don't say that to pick on Moses, and perhaps it makes a ton of sense for him to leave, but it is concerning on the surface.

I fail to see how more options is a bad thing.

It makes perfect sense if he's going to commit elsewhere. He's seen the backlash local players get. It's probably a lot worse since he was actually in LSU's back yard.

yeah but... they might ask the Denham Springs kid that went there about it, but a kid like Dylan Moses who can pick his college, no one is not taking him because of that

The good ol double standard. It's ok for some kids to go to IMG Academy but not for others. GTFO of here with that bullshite.

I completely understand why kids want to go there.

1. Coaching staff is one of the best in the country at that level.

2. Schedule is one of the best in the country.

3. Facilities at IMG rival college facilities.

4. Playing with some of the best HS athletes in the nation.

5. Televised games on ESPN Network

If people are going to high school games because players are a certain level... you go because you know one of the kids, or if the TEAM is at a certain level. if you go because one of the kids might be hyped, that's pretty creepy

IMG is a con job. Those kids would get scholarship offers wherever they played, they're just bringing them there so they can dupe kids who CAN'T play into paying $75k to cover their scholarships.

Allen lost a kid to IMG IIRC

Allen did as well as Lake Travis. Both are among the powerhouse programs in Texas.

Here's my question for IMG Academy: what if one of your "recruits" ends up not being good enough for D1 programs? Do you have any programs to help him with life after football? Or does he get tossed aside like last week's trash?
