I don't base it only on championships. The fact remains that come postseason, the guy who wore 18 all season long consistent is replaced by an under performing facsimile of that guy. This has been the for a prolonged time such that it can't be considered an anomaly. It's his norm abd it can't be his team's fault every danged time.

Now if Peyton Mannings career or legacy is tarnished for losing 2 superbowls then you gotta put Big Ben, Troy Aikman, and Terry Bradshaw on top of your lists.

Let me ask you a question. You own a team and your team made the super bowl 5 times in 10 yrs. Who would you rather have as the QB for you team?

Bradshaw 4 wins
Joe Montana 4 wins
Troy Aikman 3 wins
Tom Brady 3 out 5 wins
John Elway 2 out of 5 wins
Peyton Manning 1 out of 3 wins

Let me tell you no one will remember or care how many times a team or QB makes it to the play offs but wining the big game will be talked about for ever!

Bradshaw is underrated IMO

Bradshaw WAS underated...

He was not needed to WIN the game earlier in his career. Lets just look at what the Steelers did in the 70's....

1972 AFC title game. Loss to Miami.
1973 lost div round. Bradshaw handing off mostly at this point.

1974 Won SB. radshaw gae the ball to Franco like 38 times against MINN. The D was suffocating. Again Terry NOT asked to win the game. just not lose it.

1975 won SB over Dallas. Terry branches out a little more with some deep passes.

1976. They start 1-4 and then go on a 9 game winning streak with what I consider the BEST defensive performance in NFL history that year. they gave up just 138 points the whole year.. AFTER starting 1-4.. AMAZING. Lost to a great Raiders team on the road without Franco Harris and Rocky Blier...

1977 Lost to an upstart Denver team in Div round on the road.

1978 IMO their BEST team.. 14-2 and Terry blossomed into a deep throwing QB that made them even more deadly. Beat Dallas 35-31 in what I consider the best SB ever.

1979. Beat Rams in SB with Terry again using the deep ball to clinch a 4th sb in 6 years....

Overall The Steelers IMO had the best 9 year run in NFL history. NOW you can say its harder now to keep being great for a long period oof time with Free agency, BUT I counter with basically keeping the SAME team on a winning mode for that long of time...

YES Terry ended up being a GREAT QB... NOT stat drivin, just WIN driven....

Love Montana, but honestly, I'd take Steve Young over him. Young is so underrated.

Wait a few years and you will have to rely on Google.

The oddest occurance in NFL history is that of all the times the Raiders and Cowboys each played in the Conference titles games the same year they NEVER met in the Super Bowl....

You can either base greatness off of championships or not. Can't pick and choose when it's suitable.

Or you can base greatness off a combination of regular season stats, postseason stats, playoff wins, Super Bowl appearances and Super Bowl wins?

I agree that his regular season stats weren't that impressive but it was a different matter in those four Super Bowls.

You sound like you're about my age. Here's a story that I think you'll appreciate, that speaks to how much things have changed since we were kids:

On the morning of Super Bowl IX, my Dad took my cousin and I to the hotel where the Steelers were staying, which IIRC, was the Fontainebleau Hotel, but don't hold me to that. My Dad didn't know anyone with the NFL or the Steelers, and we just walked in, as there was no security at hotels in those days, even a few hours before the Super Bowl. When we walked in, the team was about to hold a brief prayer service in a conference room, and we just walked in, sat at the back of the room and watched. After the service was done, the players, coaches and other team associates milled around in the lobby waiting for the busses to leave for Tulane Stadium. At this point, my Dad struck up a conversation with a couple of the coaches, while my cousin and I just stood there in awe of our idols standing all around us. I noticed Terry Bradshaw having a conversation with two teammates, who turned out to be John Kolb and Mike Webster, and I slowly walked over to them, and when it appeared that they were finished talking, I quietly asked them for their autographs, which they gave to me. About 10 minutes later, all of them headed out of the hotel to get on the busses, and I watched them all board (eg. Harris, Greene, Blount, Greenwood, Swann, Stallworth, Lambert, Bleier, etc.). Of course I had no idea how many of them would go onto be Hall of Famers, or that in a few hours, they would begin a reign as one of the greatest dynasties in sports history, but I remember that morning vividly, as I was an impressionable adolescent who was mesmerized by what I was witnessing.

When I think about that day, it's really mind-boggling when you think how much things have changed. Nowadays, can you imagine how hard it would be to get that close to a Super Bowl team that close to kickoff?
