re: Stewart Mandel lists his college football program pecking order

Read his criteria, it's based on current public perception
Not really.
He clearly states it's about cache and recognition, and general public perception across the entire country. And current public perception takes into account history. Some schools have used current to overtake their lesser public historic perception...from Baron to King - like LSU; some schools have used their historic to current to lose public perception - Tennessee.
He uses the example of Georgia as a regional powerhouse.
It doesn't matter how much ND loses, they aren't regional. They command the dial on TV and everybody knows them...from even non-fans of college football.
And before the scandal, everyone knew Joe Paterno and the white Uniforms. They were a national brand. Now PSU is known for more infamous stuff but - nobody looks at their helmets and says "is that Grambling or Georgia or Georgetown.?"

Whenever I think about a list like this it exposes what a funny industry college football is in modern day.
Notre Dame is in the discussion for best college football program of all time. Miami has 5 NCs since the 80s... but debatably neither is a top tier program now, or reliably in the future. Notre Dame because of recruiting and Miami because of the stadium and other facility issues (which in turn are mostly a product of their revenue gap relative to other powers).

Yeah a team who has been to the national title two years in a row and just won one. One 10+ games 6 years in a row. Beat the likes of Ohio st twice, Oklahoma twice, Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Notre dame ooc and in bowl games. That team isn't a king right now. And save the but muhhhh Watson is gonneee dumb gump
Clemson will never be a king. Thieves of tradition and annoying as hell. Deal with it.

Just to put this in perspective, Georgia Tech is 50-29-2 against Clemson all time.
Yes, they've dominated us 4 of the last 5 years and am in no way disputing their relevance since Dabo got the machine rolling. I think Mandel's list isn't really talking about historical pecking orders here, and because of their style of play and success recently, I think they definitely belong on this list. People recognize the uniforms, ABC/ESPN has rammed the "bus ride to the hill" pregame thing down our throats for every big game there over the past few years, and they've been in the championship game twice. They are very exciting to watch and most any fan would consider them in the elite class.
I'll hang up and listen while Clemson fans chime in about how the game was played in Atlanta every year until 1974 (which sort of proves the point...if you had any pull whatsoever then you would have never allowed this to happen). Since it went to home and home, Clemson leads the series 20-18-2.

It was never as good with LSU as it was under Les Miles.
This is objectively true, considering how long Miles was at LSU.
It was never as good does not mean it cannot get better, however.

But if I held up a Georgia "G" helmet, how many of them do you think would be able to identify it off the top of their head
In a room of 100 people that could identify joe paterno, all 100 could identify the Georgia G without hesitation. Bad example. Georgia isn't a king but nobody is confusing us with gram bling or Georgetown (fricking at that btw)

Maybe the people would be wondering why the hell the Green Bay Packers logo is in black.

Doubtful.
If PSU acted like Bama, everyone would think they were awesome.
Unclaimed nat'l titles 14 (1911, 1912, 1887, 1894, 1909, 1920, 1921, 1947, 1968, 1969, 1973, 1977, 1981, 1994)
Apart from the '82 and '86 titles.
Since 1960 - five undefeated, untied seasons (1968, 1969, 1973, 1986, and 1994). Four of his unbeaten teams (1968, 1969, 1973, and 1994) won major bowl games and were not awarded a national championship.
#8 in total all-time wins. One game behind Oklahoma and Alabama.
They were a glorified mid-major beating up on Eastern creampuffs until Paterno got the hint in the middle of his career. That's the problem. That's why they weren't even sniffing real claims to titles until the 1980's.
Take a look at that 1973 schedule, for instance. They didn't play a single ranked team all year until they played #20 Pittsburgh at home the last game of the season. They only played one ranked team in the regular season in 1969 and didn't play any ranked teams in 1968 in the regular season.
That was the case for pretty much their entire history until Paterno finally got the hint in the 1980's and started scheduling real teams. The 1994 team was legit - I'll give them that one.

No they wouldn't because the sample was apparently of actual college football fans participating in a college football survey, all of whom could identify joe paterno.

I'm just busting your balls. I can't imagine someone being a "college football fan" and not knowing the Georgia logo.
I'd be willing to bet that people can recognize logos better than individual people in general.

No way is Miami still a king.
They have never even won their conference, but 5 other schools have since they joined in 2004.
Last year was their first bowl win in 10 years.
Their last major bowl appearance was more than 10 years ago (and they got obliterated by LSU). They have lost at least 4 games every year since.
They are a has been.

Miami folks were wearing tshirts saying "we may be in the same conference, but you'll never be in our league" when they switched over to the ACC. The ACC even based their idiotic divisional alignment by the fact that FSU and Miami would be an awesome ACC championship game so they put them in separate divisions. Those thugs still haven't even made the conference championship game.
Posted on 5/26/17 at 4:16 pm to VinegarStrokes
I wish the ACC would figure out how to make their damn divisions so I don't have to think for a few minutes to remember who is where.
They can split up the NC schools if they need to - I can't imagine anybody really caring whether they play Wake or not and there are a lot more non-NC schools now

Didn't they almost win the Rose bowl last year? To come back so quickly from what they just went through is impressive. Only the top programs can do something like that imo.
