It takes so much more than raw ability to make it at QB. You have to have leadership and cadence to be able to communicate effectively outside the huddle to your receivers and the backfield. You also have to be extremely disciplined to put the time and effort into game preparation. There is a lot pressure, especially at a big program like LSU, to do everything right all of the time. Combine all those things and try to put yourself into the mind and shoes of a player. Some people don't handle pressure like that very well.

There are so many other factors that putting a player's success/development solely on the coaching staff is wrong. Just a reminder, Jordan Jefferson looked pretty damn good coming out of high school too. Would you put his lack of viability at the collegiate and professional level on "Miles and Co"?

If I were advising Harris I would instruct him to work with some of the receivers during the off-season to develop some chemistry. Also, it sounds silly, but pick up material on learning effective leadership and management. Study the playbook, schedule with Cam Cameron to go over scenarios and discuss what to do in those scenarios. Coordinators have no lives, they live for this stuff. I can tell you from experience that the number one limitation on a player's growth is himself. There is always a coach willing to work with you in any decent program.

Why not go after the guy with a great arm who is also mobile? A recruit like Brandon Harris...

Or Russell Wilson,

Russell Wilson?

Hes like 20th in the league in passing yards

In ypg, Hes only 5 ypg ahead of Mettenberger. Hes below Carr, Hoyer, Tannehill

Hes below Blake Bortles in number of completions for Pete sake

I was speaking more to his college play.

When he led the nation with a 191.8 rating while completing 73% of his passes for 3,175 yards with 33 TDs and 4 Interceptions

Not to mention that he throws a hell of a deep ball and has 754 yards rushing on top of that this year. He's in the top 10 this year in yards from scrimmage despite his game manager role

98.3 NFL passer rating for his career...

Ok? I'm trying to understand your point. You always make it difficult. Was Wilson not a good college QB?

Hunh? Certainly a disconcerting trend is appearing, but there is much more than coaching and arm strength that goes into playing the QB position.

Evaluation is one area I think a lot of folks are nervous about.

In reading the article, Steve Young realized to be great he had to develop as a pocket passer. He called it a triple threat. Everyone know you can run and throw on the run, its staying in the pocket and only running after you go through your reads. He says that Joe Walsh told him if he was running around, receivers didn't know where to find him. I believe this is what Cam is trying to do with his qb's. If this is the case, then either Jennings or Harris or both will be really good qb's after a couple of years. This doesn't happen over night.

I have not seen this on the field or heard it from anyone but you. In fact I see and hear the opposite. What are you watching, a high school highlight video?

Also he is a better runner. Period. Of course Jennings might be as well, unfortunately.

Why wasn't Josh Booty one of the best QBs in LSU history? He had as much athletic ability as anyone to play the position. I guess it was solely the fault of DiNardo, Saban and company.

If you take away his game against Auburn he was completing over 70% of his passes.

With that game, he's still completeing 55% which is more than AJ

So what's your point? They don't pass much, but he is a very effective passer. There was an article on this talking about how Lynch and Wilson have to do so much more and more underrated because of bad OL play and poor receiving targets.

We know the guy can pass. Played at NC ST and then went to Wisconsin. Three consecutive seasons with at least 3000 yards and 28 TDs passing. Both schools ran/run a pro style system.

If Wilson came to us in 2011 instead of Wisconsin, we win the national championship easily.

We have 2 3,000 yard passers.

Wilson did it 3x at 2 different schools in 2 different conferences

He didn't really say that.

Intersting read though. Probably had something to do with Brees taking some time to develop into a great QB.

Young's not talking about arm strength, or accuracy, that make great NFL QBs.
quote:

He just needs playing time

Again, the gist of what Young was saying is that to be a great passing QB, you need to STUDY. He even mentions that May-June are the most important months for a QB to develop. NOT game time.

I'm getting tired of all those who think just because Jennings isn't good, that Harris must be better - AND that Harris just needs to get PT to improve. That's not what Harris needs, he needs to learn how to read a defense and proceed through his checks before taking off with the ball.

He probably doesn't think he needs to study the QB position though, because people have been telling him how great he is and what a great arm and accuracy he has, and that he just needs to get in the games. No one has yet told him that he's completely ignorant with regards to actually playing the position, and he needs to study more.

But it's exactly why he didn't beat Jennings out, he may be a better runner, he may be a better passer, but he's just not a better quarterback.

He'll get lots of it in 2017 and only a smattering of it before then. So I guess we have a long wait to see if you're right.
