Or are you comparing numbers head up despite the fact that Jeter played in the best lineups

Lineups don't mean as much for a leadoff hitter. Jeter did not get to take advantage of a good lineup like a 3 or 4 hitter would. The guys Jeter drove in were typically the 7,8,9 hitters.

It doesn't matter where you hit in a great lineup everyone benefits.

all metrics, even the ones that adjust for playing era give the nod to jeter hitting wise.

they also say jeter is a below average fielder.

so again jeter slight nod with the bat, but the gap in fielding is astronomical.

Mediocre to slightyly above average? Probably.

make it mediocre to below average and ill agree. He was never slightly above average. Go look at his UZR or DRS. I'm sure you will scoff at those metrics because they're not perfect, and i agree they arent.

But they're certainly better than fielding pct which has been used in this thread quite a bit.

Better Fielding Percentage and WS rings/playoff appearances clearly make Jeter the better player. Plus he had that sweet-arse hop/pivot throw from the hole. Nevermind that he was hop/pivoting because he was late getting to the ball in the first place, it looked fricking cool. GOAT.

You are probably right there. At his best, he might have acheived mediocre to slightly above average. The bulk of his career was spent as a mediocre to below average fielder. I still contend that his poor fielding had a lot less impact on wins/losses than Ripken's .250 averages and in years when the Os had really good lineups)

fair enough. WAR completely disagrees, but I won't use WAR to make an argument against Jeter.

He made one random comment about ripken and luck out of the blue and derailed an entire thread for 4 pages.

I'm not a huge fan of overvaluing WAR stats, but they are useful.

I mean, you can't compare Jeter and ARod in the regular season, but go look at postseason stats and it's laughable. WAR doesn't tell the whole story.
