St. Louis Cardinals Investigated by F.B.I. for Hacking Astros by kiloIf the Cardinals were trying to use it to gain a competitive advantage why on earth would they expose that there was a security risk/breach by leaking stuff to the media and not tried to maintain long term access to their system?
Well duh, it's because since they've been a perfect franchise for their whole existence, they messed up the first time they ever tried to cheat.

I highly doubt the St Louis Cardinals front office tasked its employees to hack into the Astros files from some mid/low level employees fricking home. I know some people hate them some Cardinals but common sense here folks.
Because common sense says carrying this out from the GM's office at Cardinals HQ and having it traced back there would have been much smarter and made the whole thing much easier to deny?

Because a billion dollar franchise that wanted to do this ordered from he top wouldnt have done either but would have done so at a time and place as not to be traced at all and surely wouldnt have leaked the info to the media to expose the breach?

I heard the low level employee passed the information he stole around the office.
Uh oh.....

And then emailed it to deadspin so all the world could know they were hacked from his basement...

Is it fairly common for low level scouts/employees to have access to network passwords used by former executives?

Jokes on you, Cardinals don't work from an office, the HQ is made of Rainbows, Lollipops, Chocolate, and World Series banners.

This could not happen to a more deserving team. I have always despised the Cardinals.
The Cardinals are to baseball what the New England Pats are to football--CHEATERS!

if true they should have the hammer absolutely dropped on them all. this is "banned from baseball" level stuff for me, far worse damage and compromising the integrity of the game than anything Pete Rose did (IF TRUE)
get outta here. it isn't even close to that. the cards and the Astros aren't even in the same league.

Luhnow was the VP of Scouting, so I would say yes it's fairly common that the scouts under him would have access to his database built around players/scouting reports among other things.

Funny how you've been MIA from any astros thread since the start of the season. At least LE is consistent.

So they had to examine a list of passwords to figure out a password he had already given everyone anyway? I guess that makes sense if you want it to.
quote:
Investigators believe Cardinals officials, concerned that Mr. Luhnow had taken their idea and proprietary baseball information to the Astros, examined a master list of passwords used by Mr. Luhnow and the other officials who had joined the Astros when they worked for the Cardinals. The Cardinals officials are believed to have used those passwords to gain access to the Astros’ network, law enforcement officials said.
