Speedo and Ralph Lauren among sponsors that dropped Lochte like a hot potato after the Rio fiasco

Major brands dropped Ryan Lochte en masse on Monday, in the wake of an incident at the Rio Olympics where the swimmer misrepresented a claim that he and his teammates were robbed at gunpoint.

In a bizarre twist to a story that broke last week, Lochte admitted that he may have exaggerated his initial account about being held up in Rio de Janeiro. Local police countered his claims, saying that Lochte and his teammates had actually been confronted by private security guards after damaging a gas station bathroom.

In response, a number of high profile endorsers have broken ties with the swimmer. Speedo USA was the first of three sponsors to announce that it is ending its sponsorship of Lochte.

Seems like an overreaction in my opinion.

But I guess he's of no use to these companies anymore anyway.

I think it is a pretty predictable outcome. He's not Michael Phelps or Usain Bolt.

Acting like an a-hole and lying about it is what he's done to himself. That doesn't bring in the endorsements.

While I don't agree with their decision, it seems like an easy out on the sponsor's part to stop paying a guy at the end of his limelight.

Why don't you agree with the sponsors?

Perfect opportunity for products like spray tanner, Axe body spray, and hair mousse to step in and get a new spokesmodel.

Even Phelps was dropped by Kellogg's after his suspension for smoking weed. Tiger lost most of his sponsors for infidelity. No one is immune from losing sponsors

Why, most citizens have no clue who Lochte is or what he does.

I don't agree with the pile on mentality that making a mistake justifies becoming a complete pariah. Yes what he did was stupid, but the fact that they are talking about banning him from swimming over getting drunk and vandalizing a bathroom is ridiculous. I don't remember, but did Phelps' sponsors take off on him like this after he got a DWI?

I will never understand why this site cant understand what frat stars actually look like. What you just listed is the opposite of what a frat star would wear. It is who a true frat star despises the most

The big ones, Speedo and Polo just didn't renew his deal. He was tracking toward obscurity and this incident was just the push to get him there more quickly.
