The Spieth thread made me think. As I stated in the other discussion, Roger Staubach & Arnold Palmer seem to be the only sports figures/athletes in my lifetime who never got "built up and torn down" by the press or public.

Any others y'all can think of?

Locally, Craig Biggio has stayed pretty squeaky clean.

Really, you can only think of two?

Jeter
Mariano Rivera
Cal Ripken
Griffey (well, unless you count that time he fell asleep in the clubhouse during a game)
Maddux/Glavine/Smoltz
Frank Thomas

I can think of plenty, and that's just baseball.

Jeter did suffer some backlash because of the overhype by the NY & national media (plus, some absolutely atrocious Gold Glove awards).

I think Dale Murphy might qualify from baseball. Good player, but not so great he got overhyped. And he was universally liked by both fans and baseball people.

Suffering some backlash for being overhyped is in no way being "torn down"

Here's an even better example, Bart Starr

Griffey has been ripped a bunch by people saying he is an a-hole in person.

Ripken got criticized a bunch for being selfish about his streak when his production warranted being benched. He held the Os hostage because of his stature with the fans on some terrible Os teams.

I think you're really reaching, especially for Griffey.

How about Hakeem Olajuwon?

Shaq? The "him and Kobe" thing was always there but I never thought the media tore down Shaq.

David Robinson
Hakeem Olajuwon

Who are these people you talk to? Did you just see a tweet here and there?

David Robinson got ripped for being soft. That kind of went away once he won a title, but it was still there.

Payton (rightly or wrongly) had rumors flying around abou the exact nature of his illness. Plus, infidelity issues probably would disqualify him.

Hakeem Olajuwon wasn't always thought of in a positive light.

Before really got into Islam, he had somewhat of a bad-boy image:

He also didn't get along with teammates.

Then, there was the controversy when Hakeem Olajuwon said he was hurt and the Rockets said he was full of shite that he just didn't want to play.

Olajuwon changed his image... he wasn't always seen how he is seen now.

You might as well have started a thread, "Roger Staubach and Arnold Palmer the only athletes to have never been talked bad about." sheesh.
