Spieth to try and get in Phil's head during money game practice round

quote:

Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas are going to play a practice round against Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler before the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits. Spieth, looking to mess with Phil a little bit, has said he’s going to bring his U.S. Open trophy and set it on the green on every hole just to rub it in Phil’s face.

ETA:

For those that didn't know, a lot of PGA guys have some intense money games going in these practice rounds. Phil, obviously, loves that shite and is known for trying to get in his opponents' heads with some funny antics.

Pretty common to have antics like this. Phil is notorious for fricking with people to get in their heads during money games.

Phil has really taken the younger guys under his wing at these Tuesday practice rounds over the years.

Just another reason why he's the GOAT, until Rory and Spieth pass him.

Lulz. Speith will probably have 10 majors by the same age that Phil won his first.

They need to be careful about publicizing these practice round money games. I could definitely see it as being one of those things that has happened for a long time and everybody knows its going on. But the second it gets some publicity and especially bad publicity like the most popular money game guy being involved in a FBI gambling investigation, large organizations go running and start banning it. I mean it would be a travesty if millionaire golfers couldn't gamble on golf.

I'm pretty fascinated by them, how much are we talking about? First thing I thought of was the irs would want their cut and I'm sure they're breaking gambling laws. It's pretty crazy, could you imagine lebron joking about losing a bunch of money to Steph Curry in a pregame shooting match?

I am willing to bet (pun intended) the competitive level would be higher than your average Wed night mid-season game.

It probably doesn't take a very smart accountant to report no net gambling winnings in a year, so I don't think the IRS is much of a concern.

I'm no lawyer, but isn't it legal for two individuals to gamble amongst themselves, as long as there is no house involved taking a percentage?

They have thousands and thousands of dollars on the line on some holes. Phil and Fowler always do this with each other. That odd couple has become best friends.

Phil after he beat Tiger in a money game years back :

quote:

Mickelson said he took the $100 bills from Woods and made a photocopy of them. He then made smiley faces on the copy and wrote, "Just wanted you to know Benji and his friends are very happy in their new home."

"I left it in his locker," Mickelson said. "That was the last time we played."
