I also think the punishment wasn't a huge deal in the grand scheme of things. I am guessing that they will probably be readmitted at some point to the band and their scholarships reinstated.

Expelling the students would have been harsh, but I don't think removing extra benefits that they were provided to represent the school is out of line.

It's also not a huge deal for them to have their scholarships revoked. They're allowed to go to school; they just have to pay for it themselves or find another benefactor. What's the big deal?

Yep. The band is representing the school in an official capacity, so it should be held to a higher standard than regular students.

If you embarrass the school while wearing the uniform, it's reasonable to not let you wear the uniform anymore. And if you're not in the band, you don't get a band scholly.

For a lot of schools, the pep bands are encouraged to get under the skin of the other team. Just because someone took offense to one thing, doesn't mean you should shut the shite down. Put them on probation or something.

Thinking that this is a big deal = pussification of America.

USM: I'll pay for you to go to school. I'll also pay for you to go to Pittsburgh and play on national tv for one of our basketball games and pay you a nominal stipend for the work you do. This total package, over the course of four years, is worth tens of thousands.

Douche: Where's your green card?

USM: We offered you what we considered to be a generous package, and you responded in part by doing something on national tv that embarrasses us and makes us look like a bunch of stupid rednecks. We find that action to be insulting to us, especially since you were doing it on our buck. We welcome you to continue your education here at USM, but you will have to find another way to pay for it. We bid you good day.

Anybody who finds this to be unreasonable or indicative of America's pussification is a moron.

Right, but USM doesn't want to pay for them to go to college. So that kind of ends the issue since it's their money and not yours.

When you're going to school on someone else's tab, you're basically at the mercy of their whims. It's their money.

They represent the whole school and should be especially careful on a nationally broadcasted game. It's pretty embarrassing for the alumni. For a school that is fighting to make a name for itself, any negative coverage isn't good. Not to mention the sorority girls there who made national headlines for dressing in blackface.

I think letters of apology would have been enough.

This however, doesn't sound like it was a unified band chant or cheer, otherwise I suspect you would see the director reprimanded.

The kids used a racial stereotype to try and get under the skin of a player and that doesn't show very good judgement. If they were just regular students in the stands, this would not be an issue. The problem for them is that they were officially representing the school, and as such, different standards apply. I am sure the school would have had a similar response if they were chanting "F*ck your mother!" or something similar. It makes the school look bad.

I view it as being an employee of a company. If I go out and get boozed up and get a public intoxication and do something stupid and it gets caught on tape, any repercussions are on me. If I was to do the same thing in my company uniform and damage the image of my company, I am sure I would face some type of disciplinary action from my employer.

This.

I personally am not making a huge deal out of this issue, but since they were on scholarship and made asses out of themselves, they deserve to face the consequences.

I'm willing to bet their "scholarships" that are revoked are similar to the $1,000 scholarship every Tiger Band member gets...
