Five members of the University of Southern Mississippi pep band have had their scholarships revoked and have been removed from the band after they yelled a derogatory chant at a Puerto Rican player during an NCAA basketball tournament game last week.

I don't feel bad for them. The fans are thee fans, but the band knows they're supposed to play it cool. They knew the rules and they broke them.

Sucks for those 5 students, but as university representatives on a school sponsored trip, I am not too surprised.

Curious as to how they identified those specific 5 as the ones that chanted it.

Puerto Rico is also a U.S. Commonwealth. You don't need a green card. Dumbasses. Joke's on them.

Has it been established that the player had a green card?

Yeah, when you embarrass the people who are paying for your education and paying for the trip you're currently on, and it's caught on national tv, you run the risk of having those people stop paying for your education and future trips. Makes sense to me, brother!

I'm all for free speech, and this sounds hypocritical, but frick hate speech. I don't think you should be arrested for it or anything, but it disgusts me down to the core. Its one thing to joke, but when its intended to hurt, its bullshite. I hate the excuses people use, such as its only for the lower segment of society/criminals and such. No, there are morons who need to die in a fricking fire. There is no place for that in society today, or ever.

Out of curiosity, what's hypocritical about it?

They're not even kicked out of school, brother. They just have to pay for it themselves. This reaction is completely appropriate.

any reaction is an overreaction. nothing at all should have happened to them.

I'm sure most of those guys aren't even racist, just trying to heckle someone. Most players actually find it funny. We have our student section behind the other team's bench, most foreign players laugh when you make fun of their country.

I know Puerto Rico is different, but still. It's not a huge deal.

If I was paying for you to go to school, and you appeared on national television saying something that I found embarrassing to me, you're telling me that it would be an overreaction for me to withhold any future money from you? It's my money, and it isn't for you to judge what is and isn't an overreaction when it is in terms of how I'm spending my money.

Bad point by you.

I guess you don't like rap music! However, I agree with you that "free" speech should perhaps have a footnote in The Bill of Rights!
