Alabama and Florida State, winners of three of the last four national championships, are finalizing a deal for a neutral-site game in 2017, a source confirmed to ESPN.
Florida State athletic director Stan Wilcox told a group of Seminoles boosters at a board of directors meeting in Charleston, South Carolina, on Friday that the game is set and although a contract has not been signed, an agreement was in place, according to the Palm Beach Post.
The Post reported Friday that the schools will earn a payday between $4 and $5 million from the game.
The Post reported in November that the two schools were negotiating a contract to open the 2017 season at New Atlanta Stadium, the future home of the NFL's Atlanta Falcons. Wilcox told ESPN in March that a contract would likely be finalized in the summer, and a source told ESPN on Friday that, although the deal has not been signed, it's only a matter of time before it is completed.
Many college football fans hoped the Crimson Tide and Seminoles would meet in the postseason the last two years. An improbable last-second loss in the Iron Bowl knocked Alabama out of the national championship picture in 2013, and Florida State would defeat Auburn in the title game. This past season, Alabama and Florida State were playoff participants but did not play each other. Both lost in the College Football Playoff semifinals.
Part of the intrigue of the anticipated 2017 game is the bond Alabama coach Nick Saban and Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher, both West Virginia natives, share. Fisher served as Saban's offensive coordinator at LSU -- the two won a national championship with the Tigers in 2003 -- and the two have remained close since Fisher left for Florida State before the 2007 season.

should definitely be a better game than the last time they met.
that 2007 game in Jacksonville between them was pretty terrible.

I haven't checked but I'm thinking Bama will have an absolutely brutal 2017 schedule

Florida State in ATL, Fresno State at home, Colorado State at home. @Auburn, LSU at home. Tennessee at home.

Is the SEC Championship game going to move to the new Falcon's stadium? Or stay in in the Ga Dome?
Or is the Ga Dome going to get demolished?

When does the new stadium open?
I thought I saw somewhere they were keeping the Ga dome.
What about turner field after the new Braves stadium is built? Going anywhere?

I heard about this yesterday and there was some talk on sports radio about it on my way into work
As a fan of CFB I love it, and may well try and go to it
Analysis wise, I understand the move for FSU completely, and not at all for Bama.
For FSU, it gives them a huge game outside of Clemson/UF and maybe Miami early in the year to propel them to a NC type year if they win. If FSU has a loss, still a reasonable chance they can make it through the ACC unscathed and sneak into the playoff
For Bama, if they were to lose this game, it means they likely have to go undefeated in the SEC to get into the playoff, which doesn't happen very often.
I know there are way more things that go into this, but for 2 of the top 10 teams in the country right now, I don't know how anything other than making the Playoff is a successful year

I love this. One true marquee out of conference game and then two decent teams that you usually have to play solid against to win (particularly Fresno State). Throw in one true cupcake where you can get young guys some game experience and rest some starters, and that's about the perfect out of conference schedule in my opinion.

quote:why not? Alabama has been scheduling one big name a year since Saban has been here. This is just keeping in line with that. We play Wisconsin in 2015 and USC in 2016.

Early 2017. The new Atlanta MLS team will kick off the first season in it in February or March.

Great to hear, FSU needs to get better opponents on the schedule with the playoff format as their OOC schedule this season is just awful. Although if UF can get back on track that'll help.
Ole Miss next season and now Bama the year after is a pretty good step. Just annoying that home/home series are now dead it feels like.

Wisconsin, West Virginia and VT are not FSU. 1 of those teams has been top 10 the last 3 years, and none of the other 3 have finished anywhere near there recently
USC/FSU are an another level as far as "big names" go
OSU playing Virginia Tech isn't the same as playing Clemson or Alabama and it shouldn't be considered so (and yea I just hope we win after that game last year)

I heard a while back that one of the Atlanta colleges was working on playing football games there. I think it was Georgia State.

The problem with home/home is you have to schedule so far out to get 2 teams to agree on games 10 years away, along with anything else major that may be happening in a city on a given weekend that could cause problems
1 neutral site game is much easier to accommodate both teams who have an opening. Also, if you want a "huge" game you can do that easier 2 or 3 years in advance vs 5-10
OSU has Texas/Oregon/Oklahoma on their schedule in the next 10 years. If i told you that 5 years ago you'd say "Man OSU is scheduling monsters." Both those teams were in contention in 2008 to win the national title, and are likely 8 win teams in 2015
Edit: kind of 2 thoughts. One you schedule a real power 2-3 years out you feel better about them still being good. Two it is harder to work out schedules for home and homes

VT and WVU were both better teams when we scheduled them than when we played them. Not our fault that they got worse. We were hoping for better opponents.

Yea that happened to OSU with Cal/VT/Miami too. Those teams were top 25 annually until they got close to being on OSU's schedule
Not it may happen with Oklahoma the next couple years
