I think the easiest free ride is football at a place like Nicholls... you can just be a good HS player and not be a freak athlete. Most average kids don't have a shot at basketball scholarships or any bigger football program...

I know a head coach of a high level travel team in south Louisiana. His teams are elite 17/18 year olds looking to be drafted and/or play college ball. He said something to me recently that was very telling.

He said after all these years he finally learned the hard way that to win/succeed you have to choose speed, strength and size over talent. The funny thing is his wife chimed in and said he had to throw everything he knew about the game away and focus on the speed and strength to help the kids suceed.

His comments were directed towards year-round all week long baseball. Not travel ball in general.

I coach travel ball. We play in about 10 weekend-long tournaments over a 3.5 month period. All pitchers are kept on strict, internal innings/pitch counts. That is not what Smoltzy was talking about.

Dude just needs to let it go. Its not your daughter's fault you couldn't have a son. It is definitely not their fault that LSU, Bama, Florida, Georgia or whomever didn't think your blazing 5.1 40 wouldn't cut in the SEC.

you hit the nail right on the head with that one.

And I love how these teams go to these so called world series in Florida as if they earned it. They didn't earn it, they bought their way in. Its a racket.

It seems like there's about 398 different travel ball World Series each year ..

He said baseball isn't a year round sport. Go do other things. Having Tommy John at 14 isn't normal.

Yeah he and a lot of other specialized doctors have been saying the same thing for years.

How did Smoltz "crush" travel ball?

Only a small % of travel ball kids play year round

My kid never played year round

This!! I litterally do not know one kid that plays year round.

We play from March-mid July. Play a few tourneys in Oct/Nov just to knock the rust off. My kid only has his 11 and 12 year old years left with travel ball then it will be all school ball.

He'll play soccer August-Nov then Feb-April, soccer actually helps him to be a better baseball player.
