He said baseball isn't a year round sport. Go do other things. Having Tommy John at 14 isn't normal.

I've heard him say this before, as well as Glavine and Tommy John himself. It's not good for kids to play baseball from March to early December. I loved baseball and played JUCO here in MS, but I couldn't have played year round like some kids do now with all that traveling. I played on the HS team starting in 8th grade( this was 86) then played in Rec leagues until mid July and then was ready for football. By March of the next year I was ready for some more baseball. No burnout or arm trouble, and I went just as far as most of these travelball all-stars of today without spending 1,000 's of dollars.

While he didn't directly call out travel ball, everyone with a brain knew what he meant.

He did keep going and going, but I thought it was a good speech. About 5-7 min too long but frick it. You only get the chance once.

My aunt is always bragging to my mom about my first cousins kid who plays 8 year old travel ball like he's some kind of MLB star. What the frick is that? 8 year old travelball?
