Youre fooling yourself if you believe that, or you are not old enough to remember the early days of ESPN.

Simmons basically got ESPN in to podcasting, started the 30 for 30 series, and built Grantland. Those other guys were anchors. It is a bit easier to replace an anchor.

I dislike Simmons on my TV before games talking about what the Celtics used to be and how much he hates the Lakers. Go frick yourself Bill, I for one won't miss you.

I loved him when he was up and coming on Page 2 or whatever and was comparing sports shite to "Swingers" and "Rounders." That schtick got old, but you can't deny that his transformation into Grantland, 30 for 30, and podcast guru is amazing

yeah there are basically 3 phases of bill simmons

1. the page 2 era, which was great, refreshing, and a hidden secret that the masses didn't know about

2. the page 1 era, which became terrible. he was a caricature of his page 2 self and acted like THE coolest motherfricker on earth. all his columns about "doing vegas right" about his trips to LV with his dorky white friends were just douche chill to the max

3. the Book of Basketball era. this is where he really got his groove. concentrated on only really pushing basketball as his individual content. he went bheind the scenes for 30 for 30 and Grantland. his NBA content was fricking insane and has been white hot for a few years and Grantland got a bunch of great NBA guys to compliment him. he had good repoire with Jalen behind a mic. he really found himself

Simmons was surely an innovator, but he bit the had that fed him one too many times.

also, in his latest podcast on dan patrick, he called out the NFL and goodell again.

It was either that or that fact that his innovative style costed too much money and wasn't turning enough revenue. I mean Grantland is great and all, but the casual fan ain't got time for dat.

He thought the world of himself. I never could stand the fricker. I've hated him for years now, this nothing new for me. Now a guy like Dan Patrick....oh I can frick with Danny P.

His writing isn't bad, but he will be very hard to replace as an idea guy.

Shouldn't he be able to do this with zero repercussions? Doesn't that show the issues with ESPN?

As anyone who used to play Call of Duty can tell you, if you only cater to your casual fans, you lose the base consuming your product. If ESPN is hanging their hat on a new and improved Mike and Mike (ZANEY!), they will lose their fanbase insanely fast. I know once SVP breaks up, assuming no decent radio broadcast is added, I'll probably end up getting rid of my ESPNRadio App.

I'm a casual basketball fan, but I read a lot of their NBA stuff.

Not sad one bit that I don't have to hear his NBA coverage.

You never have HAD to hear him. If you did it was by your own damn choice and if you really hated it, the only person to blame for that is yourself.

supposedly, an ESPN writer would need permission to go on a non-ESPN site, podcast, station, etc. I think that's maybe the bigger issue here..??

Though, ESPN and the NFL are best pals. When one is talking shite about the other, they gonna get mad.

This hypothetical quote is the bottom line.

quote:

Wow...that 30 for 30 is a great series and Grantland has some great sports journalism. I think I'll tune in to ESPN'S football coverage now!

Said no one ever.

If you're looking at from a "prestige" angle then maybe you're right though 30 for 30 will probably run just fine.

But from a revenue angle, he's very replaceable. And that's all ESPN cares about.

I saw multiple threads on here about 30 to 30 broadcasts. When was the last time that happened about Sportscenter, which runs like 10 hours a day on ESPN.
