With impending free agency (in 2015)for Wieters and Davis and both being Boras' clients, the O's really need to go for it the next 2 years. The 8 mill. deal with Cruz will certainly help this team and if he rakes they can give him a QO and turn him into a potential 1st round sandwich pick in '15(if he declines the QO).

Manny needs to come back and play like he did last year and they need Jones/Davis to continue to play how they did last year. Big question is Weiters, he took a step backwards last year IMO, he provided power but not much else. If he can't get that average around .250 and OBP closer to .320 than .289 then he is closer to J. P. Arencibia than a superstar.

Damn that lineup has some serious potential

Markakis
Machado
Jones
Davis
Cruz
Wieters
Hardy

They'll be in a lot of high scoring games.

The thing with Weiters is that while he may never reach his ceiling as a Posey type player, his defensive skills make him extremely valuable while providing 20 homer pop. He also hits at the bottom half of the lineup so while the OBP is ugly, it makes tolerable regardless of his deficiencies. That's why while he and JP are similar in that regard, their worth is so exponentially different.

Sucks he never developed into that man child offensively though. Was always a favorite prospect of mines.

decent lineup no doubt, but i think their SP is still 4th or 5th in the division. I think they finish 4th in the East

Weiters has more hype than JP and is far superior defensively (JP is one of the worst defensive catchers) but him hit .210 with a .280 OBP is horrid as someone getting 500 AB a year.

Wieters needs to ditch the switch hitting. He's horrible left handed.

Agreed on Wieters just sticking to right handed. Our lineup will mash, no question. The issue is and has been pitching. If Tillman pitches like he did last season we have a solid 2 guy. Ubaldo should slot in at 3 hopefully somewhere close to his 2011 form. Norris says he's finally healthy, we'll see what that means while Chen is a very serviceable 4. Gonzalez has the inside track to the 5, but Matusz and Steve Johnson will compete. Gausman will start in AA, they want him to get that slider down and learn to make it through the lineup a third time, by far his biggest issue.

The bullpen is what scares me most, we were great in 12 and passable in 13, JJ is gone BC we didn't want to pay him. Hunter is not a closer and Patton is suspended for drugs. I'd be shocked if Buck give Matusz more than 2 weeks to make his case as a starter. We signed some Korean named Yoon who will be a setup guy but who knows. Maybe we could get Gonzalez in the pen if someone surprises for the 5 slot in spring training.

The latest on Bundy is ML healthy in June. That means done with all rehab assignments and if his stuff is back and he commands it, Buck said that's the soonest he could be in Baltimore, FWIW

I have a feeling that if Hunter fails or struggles as a closer, the next shot at closer will either be Norris or Gausman( similar to what the CWS did with Sale).

I see Britton or Matusz being traded before the end of March. San Diego would be a great fit for Matusz if he shows he can start.

No way Matusz

I doubt Matusz pitches well enough to be considered as a starter, and honestly he has more utility in the pen as our only solid lefty.

The team signed the pitchers to let Gausman mature in the minors to be a starter. We have a significant need for top flight starters, management is tantalized by the idea of a Bundy-Gausman 1-2 and want them to be ready to contribute by the all star break. I can't see Gausman going back to the pen barring some crazy circumstance.

Britton is a candidate BC he is out of options, certainly something to watch, but I doubt we get much for him thanks to inconsistency
