If Nick Saban can decide who his best players are for game one with Florida State with no preseason games, I'm pretty sure NFL coaches can do the same.

Who was Alabama starting QB in their season opener last year?

college ball is also very sloppy at the start of the year.

this isn't even debatable.

In the NFL, if you didn't have preseason, coaches would treat the first four weeks as a "quasi-preseason", much like the NBA does before Christmas, etc.

Sure you might lose early on, but you can come back from that

The Alabama-Florida State opener will have more of an effect on the CFP. Lose that and neither team will have much margin of error the rest of the season

Not a chance. First four-five weeks ratings will be terrible. Especially weeks 2-5

That's a meritless argument.

Edlemans injury could've happened on pretty much any play. Just bad luck really.

I would say keep the four games. They used to be called exhibition, but in the early 90s the NFL owners made the media change the name. But maybe have rules to limit participation to encourage more back-ups to play.

12 game season.
Cut preseason to one scrimmage vs another team and two full games.
Scrimmage like preseason high school does.
