Scout: I'd hate to be team in need of QB in 2016 NFL Draft

The scoop: "I'd hate to be a team in need of a quarterback. The best two in this draft might end up being from Memphis and North Dakota State and that ought to scare the (expletive) out of you. It takes some courage to turn that card in." -- NFC scout
The skinny: Any time a general manager takes a quarterback early in the first round, he's putting his job on the line, no matter where the player comes from. It might be a lot easier to pull the trigger on a QB from a marquee program who has played on a big stage before, but certainly this scout knows that there are plenty of examples of QBs from top programs that were picked early and went bust (JaMarcus Russell, anyone?). We've seen QBs from small schools come off the board early and go on to great success (Ben Roethlisberger, Phil Simms, Terry Bradshaw).
As for the two QBs he's referring to, North Dakota State's Carson Wentz will get a chance to prove himself against tougher competition at the Reese's Senior Bowl in January. Memphis' Paxton Lynch is a junior and has not revealed his intentions for the 2016 NFL Draft. As an underclassman, he has until a Jan. 18 deadline to make a decision on early draft entry. Both QBs are impressive talents. Our colleague Gil Brandt sees plenty to like in Wentz's game, and we saw the qualities of a top QB prospect when we took an up-close look at Lynch last month.

I guess Brett Favre should come out of retirement.

Paxton Lynch looks like a stud to me.

Why does he single our Russell? Ryan Leaf is always the first QB that comes to mind when talking about busts at the position, probably because at the time there were people who thought he should go ahead of one of the statistical best to ever take a snap.
But, I agree with him

Honestly, I don't know. I remember thinking at the time that he was taken too early. The hype around manning/leaf was otherworldly

I wasn't old enough to care much about NFL when Leaf was coming out, so I don't recall the hype.
I think people pick on Russell because (a) it was more recent and (b) it was a huge bust when you consider the money involved.

From an arm talent perspective Russell was pretty much unparalleled as a prospect. The pick made sense. He just didn't have the temperament to make it in the NFL, and that's unpredictable. The main reason he is remembered as the worst bust was really out of his control. He just happened to come into the league when the old broken rookie wage scale was at its worst. First round picks came into the league with contracts that paid them like they were already All Pro.

What's his problem with Cook? He's probably the guy I'd feel most comfortable taking. Senior, pro style offense, leader, can make all the the throws.

Goff seems meh to me. His success may be directly correlated to the scheme he runs @ Cal. Not sure how pro ready he is.

I'm not sure this is unpredictable. People knew R. Wilson was a workaholic who was committed to the game. He can't help his size. Russell has the size but never had the workaholic mentality you need. So in some ways you can see danger spots (Manziel is similar)

Well thank God we drafted Garrett Grayson last year!

Russell also got extremely fat and out of shape. I always thought that made it easier to label him the biggest bust ever.

That was part of the old system. Rookie hold outs were common and happened every year.

In hindsight you can say you saw the warning signs, but no one knows how these kids will react to getting so much so quickly. You just see what they're like when you see it every day at work.

Because Washington State isn't a top program
