Running my first half-marathon next weekend and have read conflicting info on this topic. Some folks insist that loading up on carbs for the couple days prior to a long race (half or marathon) will improve performance and assist in avoiding "the wall." Others say it is just a myth and has no effect other than a mental confidence boost.

Anyone here have any experience carbo-loading before a race? Were there any discernible benefits?

The role of carbohydrates is to provide energy, as they are the body's main source of fuel, needed for physical activity, brain function and operation of the organs. All the cells and tissues in your body need carbs, and they are also important for intestinal health and waste elimination.

its clearly not a myth.

You won't deplete glycogen stores during a half marathon. Just eat normal, unless you don't normally eat carbs.

Do exactly what you have been doing. Don't change from your training routine.

I ran 3 half marathons. I never eat more than oatmeal for breakfast the morning of my runs and never loaded up for days.

Carb loading is really a complicated thing and if you have not done it, dont start when you are about to run

You don't need to carb load for a half.

I would say the biggest thing is to not change your routine or do anything differently. Having pasta with red sauce and some meat is a solid pre-race meal. Just avoid doing stuff like eating a dozen donuts the morning of or a bucket of fried chicken the night before.

Pee before the race even if you don't feel like you have to.

Where are you running a half marathon in June? Sounds miserably hot.

Every year we have an Iron Man Triathlon at Cypress Lake in Benton. When I go into Starbucks in Bossier at 5:30 a.m. there is always a dozen or so contestants from Texas loading up on drinks with lots of sugar and caffeine.

I asked them if that really helped. They swore by it. I dunno.

Coffee does help. Sugars don't really. You want complex carbs, not simple carbs.

The amount of carbs you should be eating to train for a half marathon should be enough. Eating carbs the day before doesn't do much good.

I'd check with Hulk on the food board about carbo-loading.
