Why did it take so long for him to get in the HOF?

His resume is weird because he was only a HC for 9 seasons.

Madden on his early days;

“How stupid was that… Vince Lombardi was talking about the Power Sweep and I took a seat in the back row like in church”

Madden shared that Lombardi spoke for 8 hours… ON ONE PLAY, the Power Sweep…

“He talked for four hours… we took a lunch break, then came back and he spoke for four more hours. I walked out of that clinic and realized that I did not know a damn thing about football”

RIP, Coach Madden.

Not sure many have had such a blessed life. DId what he loved, retired young. Then found something he loved and was even better at for many more years. Has all the old and young people know him one way or another because of coaching, broadcasting, and of course EA Sports Madden.

Gets to basically watch an awesome in memoriam to himself while alive and passes away a few days later.

Yeah that makes sense, I'd imagine his family would sign off.

John Madden was like a yogi Berra. He could say things that were obvious but it would come across as brilliant. It was must see NFL game when John and Pat were in the booth. They could make a preseason game very interesting.

John Madden and the Oakland Raiders introduced me to the NFL when I was a youngster. The days of George Blanda. RIP sir.

He was a true professional and loved football.

During the NFL strike season of 1982, CBS still wanted to air football but didn't have the rights to major college football.

So they sent him and Summerall to announce a regular season Division III game.

Madden showed up two days early, went to practices and learned the players and even participated in film sessions with the team running the projector.

Madden is in the HOF because he was Mr. Football. Coach, announcer, video game icon (which he only signed up for if he said they'd do it right and he had control and input) he didn't just lend his name.

He said during his HOF speech that he thinks the busts talk to each other at night. Well I hope him and Snake are talking right now in the night in Canton.

What speaks to how great a man he was, was his response after Darryl Stingley was paralyzed, going to visit him. Patriots fans hated the Raiders especially after the '76 playoff game, but could at least admit their coach was a good man
