ESPN OTL

quote:

For 26 years, Pete Rose has kept to one story: He never bet on baseball while he was a player.

Yes, he admitted in 2004, after almost 15 years of denials, he had placed bets on baseball, but he insisted it was only as a manager.

But new documents obtained by Outside the Lines indicate Rose bet extensively on baseball -- and on the Cincinnati Reds -- as he racked up the last hits of a record-smashing career in 1986. The documents go beyond the evidence presented in the 1989 Dowd report that led to Rose's banishment and provide the first written record that Rose bet while he was still on the field.

I always laugh when people supported the idea of Rose betting sparingly and only as a manager.

as long as he was betting for his team, I don't see why this is an issue.

WC Dawg, you obviously do not know much about gambling. It's not just about wins & losses. The point spread comes into play with baseball like it does with all other sports. He could have easily managed to win his bet by pulling his starting pitcher too soon/too late, sitting this player & playing a lesser player, etc. And as Rose is a well documented, self admitted massive liar, why should we believe him about anything he says he did or did not do? His betting associates were all thugs, in & around the mob, so do you honestly think thugs like that, knowing they had him by the balls, would only use him to bet on his team?

No surprise at all, and people wonder why the only hall he will wonder is the one in his house.

It's a shame, perhaps the single greatest player, and he will never be in the hall because he had no self control.

And I can find you a lot more players that gambled as well.
He's done now!
It's so hypocritical though, plenty of players gambled on games probably their own, didn't get caught
