SEC Sports

Bama softball player hits a home run, over-celebrates, and doesn't touch home plate.

Regardless, I don't think the umpire got the call correct. I think you have to step off and appeal, not sure the tag by the catcher works.

For official stats purposes that still counts as an HR right?

College baseball is just as bad

Sacrifice but? Everybody better flood out of the dugout all the way out to the on deck circle to high five him

I don't watch anything but LSU for college baseball but I've never seen that. Usually a tap on the helmet or quick fist bump

Softball has ruined dugout chatter for both sports.

The sac bunt gets everyone out of the dugout because it's giving yourself up for the team. You'll typically get more dugout celebration from a sac bunt than you will a homer.

The difference is in MLB, they all stay in the dugout to congratulate the player

In college the players all seem to want to completely leave the confines of the dugout to do so

It's annoying

In softball you can appeal by either live or dead ball means. A live appeal means tagging the runner who missed the base. Dead ball appeal is the step off rubber one.

If you have ever umpired little league games... you will learn that umpiring 9-10 year old baseball is the worst when it comes to dugout chatter

It does work, although the catcher could have just stepped on the plate with the ball, didn't have to tag the player.

I believe it didn't really matter what the batter/runner did at that point, she had already abandoned the base path and headed to the dugout, so she wouldn't have been able to retroactively touch home plate.

Softball games are some of the most grating sporting events to attend.

I love everything about this. And of course it happened in a softball game. About as funny as the chick who tried to tie her shoe in the middle of a basketball game......while bringing the ball up.

Technically once she reaches the dugout she is out. Anything before that she is allowed to return and touch home.

Is softball different than baseball?

I recall having to have the pitcher come set, step off, and then throw it to the base.

Then the ball shouldn't have been back in play... she did hit the live ball for her play over the fence after all.

I think the teammates getting involved might affect this as well.
